I love the warm tones of autumn. When I saw this pennant banner kit, I knew the wood element would be a perfect addition to a fall palette home decor piece. I added some embossed paper and glittery leaves to create a DIY fall banner filled with warmth and texture!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY fall banner:
- Craft Wood Pennant Set.
- Foamies Colorful Fall Leaf Cutouts.
- 3 inch Chipboard Letters.
- Wood Clothes Pins.
- Darice Fall Leaf Embossing Folder.
- Gold Metallic Enamel Craft Paint.
- Wood Stain (I used Maple).
- Core’dinations Core Essentials Paper Pack (12 x 12 sheet of orange cardstock).
- Sand It Gadget.
- Glue Gun.
Using a wood stain of your choice, stain six of the wooden pennants and four wooden clothespins. Allow the stain to dry.
While the stain is drying, paint your chipboard letters gold.
Trim your 12 x 12 sheet of orange cardstock into six (6) 4 x 5.5″ pieces.
Insert the cardstock pieces into a fall themed embossing folder. Emboss the cardstock following your machine’s instructions. Repeat for all six pieces of cardstock. Embossed cardstock adds such wonderful texture to home decor projects! I especially love it for fall. It reminds me of a comfy sweater!
Remove embossed cardstock pieces from the folder and lightly sand the raised areas to reveal the lighter core color of the Core’dinations cardstock.
With your cardstock piece running vertically, pinch the cardstock in half at the top.
This will create a reference point for the cardstock center. Take a ruler and hold it diagonally from the pinched center to the bottom corner of the cardstock piece. Mark with a pencil.
Cut along the pencil marks. This will create a perfect pennant shape to adhere to your wooden piece.
Adhere the cut pennant shape to the wooden DIY fall banner piece using hot glue. Repeat for all six pennants.
Select a couple of foam leaf shapes for the two end pennants. I chose the glittered leaves that came in the pack! I love glitter.
Using hot glue, tack the leaves into place how you like them.
Then attach the wooden clothespins to the top of the leaves as a decorative element.
Finish your DIY fall banner by adhering the letters “F-A-L-L” to the remaining pennants.
Finally, string your finished pennant shapes onto the length of jute that came with the wooden pennant kit. Space the pennants how you like. I used a little bit of hot glue in the pre-drilled holes to hold the pennants in place on the jute.
That’s it! As a bonus- the opposite side of the wooden pennants are blank. I plan on adding some blue embossed cardstock, and some silver painted chipboard letters to spell “S-N-O-W.” I will be adding these glitter snowflake ornaments to the end pennants like I did with the leaves, and viola! This wooden pennant DIY fall banner will be reversible and ready to flip over when the snow flies!
To round out your fall decor, add this rustic lantern DIY fall centerpiece to your to-do list!
