Parties are my love language, and I couldn’t possibly let a holiday go by without hosting a little celebration. Your décor doesn’t have to be complicated either. These DIY color blocked wooden hearts I created for my mini galentine’s fete were a cinch to make and definitely added a pretty focal point over my dessert table. Follow along for the Valentine party idea!
Supplies needed to make your own valentine party idea hearts:
- Large Wooden Heart: Unfinished, 10.5 x 10.5 inches (I used 5 for my décor)
- Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Paint in:
- Paint Brush
- Washi Tape (or Painter’s Tape)
- Baker’s Twine
- Glue Gun
Once you’ve decided upon your color palette for your color-blocked hearts, the first step is to paint them a solid color. You could also leave them their unpainted if you want a more neutral look. You could also paint the hearts with just two colors, however I wanted to represent all the colors in my party’s color palette and chose 4 colors.
After the base layer of paint has dried completely apply a few strips of washi tape on an angle. I changed the direction of tape on each of mine for a little variety. Be sure to press firmly so the paint doesn’t seep under the tape – believe me, the touch up process can be a headache!
Next choose an area and paint it in your first color. Make sure to paint in the direction away from the tape to yet again ensure the paint doesn’t escape under the tape.
Continue painting the remaining blocks with your final colors. I ended up adding another layer of paint after the initial coat dried as the white paint showed through a bit.
Once the paint has dried, gently remove the tape. Using a fine paintbrush touch up any spots where the paint has made it’s way under the tape.
I didn’t have any frame hangers on hand, but baker’s twine attached with a healthy dose of hot glue did the trick nicely. Simply cut a 4-5 inch length of twin, fold in two, and apply hot glue on the bottom, leaving a loop at the top.
Now your hearts are ready to hang! I simply looped the twine over removable adhesive plastic hooks and they hung quite nicely.
These DIY Color Blocked Wooden Hearts were the perfect accents to my party, but would look pretty as decorations for a Valentine’s mantle. Where would you hang your hearts?
