This string art craft is a simple and lovely one. I love having different textures on display. I wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day – but with subtlety. And my mantel was looking for some love.
But I also have a confession to make: on the road to my finished heart string art project, I suffered a craft fail. Don’t worry, I’ll tell you all about it.
Supplies needed to make your own heart string art:
- 7″ x 9″ Wood Plaque
- Americana Decor Chalky Paint (I used Everlasting White)
- Sponge Paint Brush
- Finishing Nails (I used 3/4″)
- White Paper
- Marker
- Scissors
- Cord (I used Elastic Gold Cord)
I started by painting the wooden plaque with three coats of Chalky Finish paint. I love the way this paint covers – it’s good stuff.
On a piece of paper, I drew a heart and then cut it out. This was my template for my finishing nails.
Once the hammering (and occasional finger-whacking) was complete, I cut up the middle of the template with my scissors and then tore it free from the nails.
Easy-peasy, and I was ready to start doing some string art.
Now here is where I had a little fail.
I intended on using this gorgeous metallic yarn. Look at it. It’s glimmery and beautiful. It would make my heart look splendiferous, wouldn’t it?
Welllll….. I don’t know about that. I had tried to be abstract with my “yarning.” And it just…
… didn’t sit right with me.
A big part of crafting and being creative is being honest with yourself. I stood back and looked at it.
I shut one eye, and then the other.
And then I took it apart.
That is always a sad moment, the unraveling of something.
But then I broke out this metallic elastic cording. No harm in trying, right?
I was also more conscious of my string-work as I wove in and out of the nails. I didn’t go all willy-nilly as I had before.
What do you think? Do you like this heart better than the last?
This heart string art is an easy – and sweet way – to add a bit of Valentine’s Day to your decor, without having to scream out in red, white and pink.
Or if you want to – you can. There are plenty of beautiful metallic pinks and reds to choose from!

Hi! This is beautiful! Could you maybe explain how you did the weaving or at least started it??
I want to do this for a girls crafting night… How long do you think it took you to create, minus the creative pivot time
Hi Julie,
What a great idea for a girls’ night. Honestly… it all depends on how handy you are with a hammer, but under an hour. If you’re good with fine motor stuff (small finishing nails), maybe even half an hour?
LOL! I struggle to be random! Love the gold!
Hey how about another girls night
