One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is making my own ornaments for our tree. Even better if I can get the kids involved. These terrazzo DIY clay ornaments are the perfect family craft that everyone can have fun making. All you need is polymer clay and cookie cutters to get the cutest ornaments in any color palette you like!
Supplies to make your own DIY clay ornaments:
- White Polymer Clay
- Colored Polymer Clay in your holiday color palette
- Rolling Pin
- Holiday Shaped Cookie Cutter
- Baking Sheet and Oven
- Gold Acrylic Paint (optional)
- Ornament Hooks
Begin by rolling out your white clay until it is roughly 1/4″ thick. Then break off tiny pieces of the colored clay and drop them all over the surface of the white clay. This is the perfect activity for little hands to do.
Next, use a rolling pin to press the colored clay pieces into the white clay to create your terrazzo pattern.
Now you will use your cookie cutter to cut out your ornament shapes from the clay. Use a tooth pick or something similar to poke a hole in the top of the ornament for the hook to go through, then place them on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes at 275F.
Once they have baked and cooled, use gold acrylic craft paint to paint the ornament tops and add your hooks.
Then they are ready to hang on your tree.
I love that these ornaments are a family friendly craft and that you can customize them to match your decorations. I seem to change up my holiday decoration color palette every year, so it helps to add in DIY ornaments that I can make quickly and for cheap. And, not only are these DIY terrazzo clay ornaments perfect for the tree, they can also be used as stocking or gift tags! How cute would they be tied with ribbon on a pretty package?!
