I’m not sure if it’s because I live in Texas where it rarely snows, but I find that I like to surround myself with reminders that it is in fact winter. Even if it is 70 degrees outside. This doily DIY snowflake mobile is such a simple project but really brings big impact to my living room. I love how it flutters and twists and turns and looks like a whimsical snowfall right in my own home. And since it is so inexpensive to make, I won’t feel bad about having it up for only a few months.
The process is really straight forward. Just cut 2′ long sections of fishing line and tape it to the back of the doilies. You will want to alternate the doilies on each strand some will be large-small-large and others will be small-large-small. You will want to make 6 strands for the large hoop and 4 strands for the small hoop. Then simply tie the top of the fishing line around the hoops in a triple knot.
To make the hanging portion of the mobile, tie 2′ sections of fishing line around the hoop in 4 spots (if you were looking at the ring like a clock it would be the 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions). Then gather these 4 strands at the top so that the hoop is balanced all around at tie into a knot. Repeat this process with the other hoop then insert the smaller hoop in between the fishing line strands of the larger hoop about 10″ above it. Tie all the fishing line hanging pieces together into a knot and then use this to hang your mobile on a hook.
Basically you are creating a tiered mobile with the small hoop on the top and the larger hoop about 10″ below that. Once the mobile is hung, just adjust the doily strands around the hoops to create an even look.
I placed my DIY snowflake mobile over my shelves, but I think this would also look super pretty over a winter table setting. Imagine three of these tiered snowflake mobiles dancing over your dinner table! So magical!
