Pallet wood projects are all the rage right now, but sometimes it can be hard to find wood to use and not everyone likes to build stuff. I was so excited to see that you can now buy a pre-made pallet wood Christmas tree. That means you can skip the building part and get right to the decorating! I decided to add lights and bows to my pallet DIY tree and I love how it turned out. It’s going to be such a cute decoration on my front porch this year.
Supplies needed to make your own light up DIY tree:
- Pallet Wood Christmas Tree
- Mini White Lights (50 ct)
- 5/8″ Natural Jute Ribbon
- Chalky Paint in Red, Green and White
- Foam Brush
- Drill with 11/64 Bit
Step 1. Drill 50 holes into the pallet wood tree. Drill a test hole in a scrap of wood to ensure that the light fits in the hole just right. I also drew dots on with a pencil to ensure that I liked the placement before I did any drilling. The cord between light bulbs can only be stretched a certain distance, so keep that in mind with placement.
Step 2. When all of the holes are drilled, paint the wood. I watered my paint down so that I could still see the wood grain through the color, then once the paint was dry, I sanded around the edges of the wood to give the project more of a weathered look.
Step 3. Working from the back side of the DIY tree, push the light bulbs into each of the holes.
Step 4. Optional: Decorate your DIY tree. I made a bunch of bows and hot glued them on, but the sky is the limit with decoration ideas!
Step 5. Plug in the lights and let the “ooohs” and “ahhhs” commence over this beautiful DIY tree!
