For some reason I always forget about the star on the top of my Christmas tree. I mean if you think about it, there are many times where a topper really isn’t needed. But when the star looks as cute as this DIY tree star with tissue paper fringe, then why wouldn’t you make it to add to your tree? The best thing about this star tree topper is that you can completely customize the colors of the star to fit your holiday decorations. You want red and white stripe? Go for it! How about a green ombre look or all gold? Yes! You can make it anyway you want in under an hour.
I am all about a colorful holiday, so I went with a pink ombre for my DIY tree star tree topper.
Supplies needed to make your own fringed DIY tree star:
Begin by cutting your tissue paper into 1.5″ wide by 12″ long strips. Then fold the strips into fourths and fringe cut one side leaving about 1/4″ along the other edge uncut.
Repeat with the other colors of tissue paper you are using for your fringe star. Next, begin at the bottom and hot glue on one piece of the tissue paper fringe to the base of the star. Wrap the tissue paper around to the back of the star and continue gluing the first layer around the backside of the star. Next, move on to the second layer and hot glue it on so that it is covering all but 1/4″ of the first layer. Repeat with the layers changing up the colors as you move up the star until you have the whole star covered. Finally, use the scissors to trim up any fringe that is out of place or covering the space between the star points so that you can see the star shape.
To make the star fit on top of the tree, use the scissors (or a utility knife) to cut a small 1/4″ hole in the bottom of the paper mache star so that you can slip your DIY tree star onto the top branch of your tree.
I love how this fringe star tree topper looks perched on top of my colorful Chirstmas tree! But like I mentioned before, an all gold version with metallic foil fringe would look very cute too!
