I feel like every few years I get the itch to switch up the theme of my Christmas decor. I’ve transitioned to a more modern rustic idea this year and with that, I needed to update some of the smaller pieces that I’ve got sprinkled throughout my home that really bring that cozy holiday feel together. This sweet chalkboard DIY reindeer pulls in the colors that I’m using, plus it allows for personalization which is a big bonus!
Supplies needed to make your own chalkboard DIY reindeer:
- Unfinished Wood Deer
- Americana Black Chalkboard Paint
- Paintbrushes (foam and small standard craft brush)
- Aleene’s Quick Dry Tacky Glue
- Red Glitter
- Red and White Baker’s Twine
- Chalkboard Marker
Step One. Begin by painting the DIY reindeer with the chalkboard paint using the foam brush. Paint vertically for the first coat and horizontally for the first coat, making sure to let the paint dry completely in between coats. Use the small craft brush to paint in the smaller spaces. Allow the paint to cure overnight.
Because I wanted a slightly more rustic flair to my reindeer, I chose to leave the wood base unfinished. You could paint it with the chalkboard paint or even paint an accent color.
Step Two. When the chalkboard paint has cured, apply a small dot of the tacky glue where the nose would be.
Step Three. Sprinkle a generous amount of the red glitter on top of the tacky glue, ensuring that the glitter completely covers the tacky glue. I always make sure to use glitter over a paper plate to help simplify clean up later.
Step Four. Shake the excess glitter on to the paper plate and allow the glue to dry completely.
Step Five. Loop the baker’s twine around the reindeer’s neck to create the look of a festive scarf.
Step Six. Use a chalkboard marker to decorate your DIY reindeer…or leave it plain like I did. Do what works best for you and your decor!
