When it comes to Conversation Hearts (the traditional Valentine’s Day hard candy), there are two types of people…either you love them or hate them. I’ve got to be honest, I’m on “Team Hate Conversation Hearts” because they are way too sugary for my taste. But I loved using them as inspiration for this Valentine’s Day DIY Conversation Heart Wreath! The colors are so much fun and I loved customizing each heart with a different sweet sentiment. Hope you enjoy making one too!
Supplies needed to make your own Valentine’s Day DIY wreath:
- 3.5″ Paper Mache Heart Box with Lid (11).
- 12″ Wooden Embroidery Hoop.
- Hot Temp Glue Gun.
- DecoArt Crafter’s Acrylic Paint in:
- Ranger Archival Inks Red Jumbo Stamp Pad.
- Alphabet Stamps.
- Purple Tulle Netting.
Step one. Remove the lids from the heart paper mache boxes. We’re not going to use the backs but definitely save them for another project!
Step two. Determine the heart placement by laying them out on the embroidery hoop. I used 11 heart lids to fit perfectly on my 12″ embroidery hoop.
Step three. Paint each of the lids a different color of paint. You may have to add another coat for full coverage. Allow to dry completely.
Step four. Use alphabet stamps and permanent ink pad to add words to each heart. Don’t worry too much if the letters aren’t perfectly aligned. The original candies are imperfect too!
Step five. Apply a large clump of glue to the embroidery hoop and affix each heart. You might have to hold the heart in place while the glue dries.
Step six. Once the front has dried, go back and add more hot glue to the back. Don’t be stingy!
Step seven. You can either add a ribbon to hang your Valentine’s Day DIY wreath from or just hook the embroidery hoop on a nail.
Your super “sweet” Valentine’s Day DIY wreath is done!

Is the acrylic paint matte, satin, high gloss?
Hi Kim,
You can find links to the paint that was used in the supply list above. It is just basic DecoArt® Crafter’s Acrylic™ Paint.
This makes me want to buy alphabet stamps 🙂
Hi, What size alphabet stamps should I buy? They don’t have them at Crafts Unleashed and I don’t know what size I should get. Thanks. Love this project!
So, she answered me somewhere, i forget where tho. They are 3/4 inch stamps. I ordered some from Hobby Lobby and they were horrible. Some of the rubber fell off the wood. I got two sizes because at the time I didn’t know the size. Both were wrong. Too big and too small. Anyway, I couldn’t find 3/4″ so I just used the small ones. It came out nice. It’s on my door now! some things I would do different, but overall it’s okay.
