One of the classic icons of summertime is the watermelon! Nothing tastes better on a hot day than a cool slice of this juicy fruit! These DIY serving trays will make a happy little addition to my picnic basket!
Supplies needed to make your own watermelon DIY serving tray:
- Unfinished Wooden Trays (set of 3).
- Holiday Green Acrylic Craft Paint.
- Bright Red Acrylic Craft Paint.
- Washi or Masking Tape.
- Craft Knife.
- Black Paint Pen or Permanent Ink Pen.
- Clear Gloss Spray.
The first thing you will want to do is prepare your wooden trays for painting. Sand any rough edges, and tape off the bottom portion of the trays with a low tack tape (masking, or washi).
I used a craft knife to trim the washi tape- to get it into the corners with precision.
Continue with the tape until all three trays are ready for paint.
Then begin painting! I chose to paint the sides of the trays first- so green paint on this step.
It took two full coats of paint to get really nice coverage on the wood.
Allow paint to dry thoroughly. Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the tape.
Adhere tape to the sides of the wooden trays- preparing it for the red (bottom) layer.
Apply the red paint. Again, two coats or more if needed.
Allow the red paint to dry thoroughly. Carefully peel up the tape.
Touch-up paint if needed. Then, using a black paint pen, or a permanent black marker, create the watermelon “seeds.”
The seeds are a tear-drop shape, and look best when they are “scattered” on the DIY serving tray and not all facing the same direction.
Once the “seeds” are dry, apply 2-3 coats of a clear gloss sealer to the entire DIY serving tray. Allow to dry between coats.
Enjoy your little (wooden watermelon) slices of summer!
