Make Your Own Vacation Inspired Beach in a Box

Have you ever felt the need for sun and sand between your toes when it is snowing outside? I certainly have.

I always wish I could somehow bottle up some summer sun- like I do my summer tomatoes. Here is the next best thing!

Preserving a little bit of vacation- and maybe (maybe!) if I put it right next to the heater vent in the winter, I can take myself back to the beach with this beach in a box.

Beach-in-a-box-Crafts-Unleashed-2Supplies needed to make your own beach in a box:

1I found it easiest to get started by removing the hinge hardware from the box. This made it easier to paint.

Beach-in-a-box-Crafts-Unleashed-2Decide how you would like your box painted.

I wanted to try and make my box look similar to driftwood. I painted the entire box a dark brown color.

Beach-in-a-box-Crafts-Unleashed-3I did it very sloppy, and before it was completely dry, I went over it with light grey paint.

4Then, before the grey paint was dry, I took a paper napkin, and rubbed paint off in parts- making sure to rub really well on the edges of the box, where it would naturally be worn away.

5I was happy with the look!

Re-attach the hardware, and allow the soon-to-be beach in a box to dry.

6You can certainly paint your box using any method you would like. :)

When the box was dry, I started on the inside.

Trim your photo to fit the inside of the box lid. Then apply a coat of Mod Podge to the inside of the box lid.

7 Adhere your photo to the lid. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles, and allow to dry completely.

When the Mod Podge is dry, apply a coat over the top of your photo.

89Try to get the brushstrokes even. It will make a nicer finish.

Allow the box to dry completely.

I sealed the rest of the beach in a box with Mod Podge as well. That step is optional.

Then, add your sand.

10Add as much as you like!

Then add your beach in a box miniatures.

12Throw whatever you like into the sand! I added shells we gathered on vacation to the miniatures.

Give yourself some time to dig around in it a bit.

18Your vacation inspired beach in a box is done.

And ready for you to open it up….

Thanks Melissa! I live in Utah, and we don’t get to beach nearly as much as I like, but I sure find it strangely therapeutic to rake that sand in the box. :)
