When I was younger, I was always baffled by my mother’s fascination with switching out decorative pillows in the living room. I didn’t understand that pillows could be more than a functional piece to prop up my head while watching cartoons. Now that I’m older with a house of my own, I absolutely adore fun pillows that I can switch out with the seasons! I whipped up this 4th of July patriotic DIY pillow for my own couch and hope you enjoy making one as much as I did!
- 16 x 16 White Pillow Cover
- 16 x 16 Pillowform
- Bright Red Heat Transfer Vinyl
- Blue Heat Transfer Vinyl
- Electronic Cutting Machine
- Embroidery Floss
- Tapestry Needles – Size 16
- Free “Happy 4th of July” Cutting File
Step 1. Before we actually start on making the pillow, you’re going to have to pull the Free “Happy 4th of July” Cutting File into your cutting machine program. I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 but you can use any machine you have on hand. Once the file is cut and weeded, position the first color in the center of the pillow case.
Step 2. Lay down a protective piece of fabric and iron the vinyl on high heat.
Step 3. With the first color affixed, layer the second sheet of vinyl in place.
Step 4. Again, use a protective piece of fabric and iron design with high heat.
Step 5. Now that the vinyl design is transferred to the pillow, let’s start making the tassels! Grab a strand of the embroidery floss and without unraveling it, tie a small piece of the floss to each end to secure together.
Step 6. With both ends tied securely, fold entire loop over and cut in half.
Step 7. Grab another piece of floss and tie a small knot about 1/2″ from the top of the tassel.
Step 8. Repeat steps 5-7 until you have all four tassels.
Step 9. Attaching the tassels to the patriotic DIY pillow is super easy! Just thread the loose strands of the tassel into a large upholstery needle and insert into the corner of the pillow case. Turn the pillow case inside out and tie a knot in the thread to secure.
I absolutely love how this fun pillow updates my living room for the upcoming holiday!
