Sugar Scrub Recipe: Orange & Brown Sugar

Craft Basics· Mother's Day· Wedding Favors & Gifts

Sugar scrubs are great for exfoliating dry skin and help to lock in moisture with nourishing oils. I’m known for always having sugar scrub containers around. My sisters often leave my house with my latest sugar scrub creation and make requests for their favorites. I’ve been making my own scrubs for years after realizing how pricey they can be to buy. Back in college, my friend and I sat down one weekend and experimented with different sugar scrub recipes and I’ve been hooked ever since! Today, I’m sharing a twist on the most basic brown sugar scrub recipe. This orange brown sugar scrub is refreshing with its citrus scent and helps soften dry hands.

  • David Tutera Hinged Lid Glass Jars
  • Baker’s Twine
  • Adhesive Tape Runner
  • Orange Brown Sugar Scrub Printable Labels
  • Circle Punch (optional)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest or orange essential oil

The key to finding the right texture for a sugar scrub is starting off by mixing half a cup of oil with 1 cup of sugar. If you prefer a scrub with a course texture and not as oily, add another half cup of sugar to the mix. Slowly increase ingredients until you find your preference in texture. I’ve made countless sugar scrub recipes with olive oil and coconut oil and both work really well. Sometimes the coconut oil scent will overpower the scent of the scrub you’re working with, so keep that in mind when deciding on which oil to use. I recently made a coconut tangerine sugar scrub that smells incredible. I’m sure the coconut oil with orange and brown sugar smells equally as great. Another option is sweet almond oil which is great for your skin.

Sugar-scrub-recipe-Crafts-Unleashed-3Making your own sugar scrub is as easy as can be. You simply combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. If you plan to use the scrub within two weeks, you can add fresh ingredients like the zest of an orange. Otherwise, the scrub can last up to two months. This sugar scrub recipe was enough to fill four of these mini David Tutera jars.

scrub 4Tie a bow around the jar with baker’s twine, and you’re done!

Sugar-scrub-recipe-Crafts-Unleashed-2Sugar scrubs are one of my favorite gifts to give. They’re easy to make and are perfect for last minute gifts. They’re also great to include in a spa pampering gift basket. I hope you try this orange brown sugar scrub recipe – it’s fabulous!

Can you use whatever scent essential oil you wish with this recipe? I’m thinking lemongrass or tea tree or lemon?

Just a question…Does the orange peel need a preservative to inhibit bacteria? Will it cause the “scrub” to go bad? I’m just wondering what would prevent bacteria growth. Would the oil act as a preservative?

Just love it when I see one of these spa treatment posts. Have got quite a notebook full of recipes to make. I thought I’d print them all out on pretty paper to give daughter/grand daughters to try. They have spa days often so this would be fun for them. Glad you shared this, thanks so much for the labels. Happy days
    Pinned and saved labels.

I make my own scrubs as well, and have for years. My favorite is salt in baby oil. Exfoliates and moisturizes. I just don’t like cleaning the tub after using baby oil. lol I’ll be trying this recipe.
