I like the cute side of Halloween a little more than the gory, spooky side. Today’s spider DIY pom pom garland makes me happy, which is ironic because I detest real spiders. But these guys? Come on! They are cute!
You can make your garland as long or as short as you like. A perfect little accent for Halloween!
Supplies needed to make your own spider DIY garland:
- 2 inch Black Pom Poms (I used two packages)
- White Baker’s Twine
- Black and White Twist Baker’s Twine
- Small 7mm Googly Eyes
- 3mm Black Chenille Stems
- Hot Temp Glue Gun
The first thing I did was string my pom pom spider bodies on white bakers twine to mimic a spider web.
String a large (tapestry or other) needle with a double length of bakers twine.
Bring the needle and twine through the center of the pom pom.
Leave some length with the string, then tie the string ends and trim them.
Pull the string taut and it will disappear into the pom pom.
Repeat for all of your spiders.
The next thing I did was cut out some spider legs from chenille stems (pipe cleaners). Note that these pipe cleaners are thinner than the standard sized ones. I thought they looked better proportionately.
Fold a pipe cleaner in half.
And fold it in half a third time.
This will give you 8 equal sized legs per pipe cleaner.
Using wire cutters, trim one end of the pipe cleaner folds.
See? Four little sets of spider legs.
Repeat for all of your spiders.
Using hot glue on the fold of the “v” attach the legs to the middle of the spiders. Make sure the string is on top, and the legs are equal on both sides.
You will need to hold the glue in place for a few seconds until it dries.
Repeat for all of your spiders and legs.
Adhere googly eyes to your spiders.
Tie your finished spiders to a length of bakers twine. I chose to hang the spiders at different lengths for variety. I spaced my spiders about 6 inches apart on the bakers twine. You can decide how long you want your garland to be, and space them accordingly.
That’s it! Knot the ends of the bakers twine when you have finished stringing the spiders.
Choose a place indoors, or outdoors to display your infestation of silly spiders!
