diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-5Step 1. Mix clays together to achieve the color that you want. You may want to use some clay conditioner to speed up the process. I used a brown and black combo to create a deeper brown clay.

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-6Step 2. Create a rectangle from your clay, but make sure to save a bit for covering the eye later.

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-7Step 3. Adhere the eye in the middle of the rectangle. Cover it with rolled out, flattened clay on the top and bottom to create the eyelid and the bottom of the eye.

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-8Step 4. Use a ball-tip tool to blend the eyelid area with the rest of the rectangle, creating “wrinkled ridges” for a more realistic look.

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-9Step 5. Now it’s time for the fun part! Texture the surface of the rectangle to create grisly monster skin. Use a variety of tools to create a believable effect. You can also use nails, ball point pens, tips of brushes – anything goes!

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-10Step 6. Add your eyepin by first cutting the excess amount and using jewelry pliers to carefully push it on top of the “book.”  Tip: To create a pearlescent sheen, brush metallic pigment powder (or even pearly eyeshadow from an old make up palette) on your book, making sure not to disrupt the grisly monster skin effect. Use browns, silvers and blacks to create an aged surface effect.  Bake your clay according to the directions on the package to set.

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-12I love how the eye stares at you wherever direction you go.

diy-halloween-project-book-necklace-consumer-crafts-unleashed-3This fun DIY Halloween project comes together in less than an hour and is the perfect pre-Halloween activity for tweens, teens and adults alike. Have fun and make some eye monster nook DIY necklaces today!
