We’re big fans of Halloween so I usually enjoy making themed family costumes for my two boys, my husband, and myself. I use to go all out with costumes and accessories but since there’s brand new little addition to our family, I’ll be lucky if the kids’ store bought costumes are ordered on time. Since full on costumes aren’t in the stars for me this year, I thought it would be fun to make some crazy accessories that I can just throw on with a black t-shirt and some jeans (nevermind the newborn baby throw up!). These cheesecloth ghost earrings are easy to make and the perfect fashion statement for a big night of trick-or-treating!
- Fabric Stiffener
- 1″ Foam Balls
- Bamboo Skewers
- Liquid Pearls – Onyx Pearl
- Fish Hook Earrings
- Foam Block
If you’ve ever made the larger version of these cheesecloth ghosts, making these earrings is going to be a cinch! To begin, press two foam balls onto the sharp end of the skewer and insert into the foam block. Set aside for use later.
Cut four 5″ squares from the cheesecloth. Don’t worry if they’re not perfectly cut or symmetrical. Ghosts never are!
Pour the fabric stiffener in a container. You’re only going to need a couple tablespoons since you’ll be squeezing the majority of it out of the cloth.
Working one square at a time, dip the cheesecloth into the fabric stiffener and then squeeze out excess liquid back into container. Gently open the cloth. Note: your hands will get messy if you don’t use gloves!
Spread the wet cloth over the foam balls and repeat with other squares. Allow to dry completely.
Once the ghosts are completely dry, remove them from the skewers and carefully press out the foam balls. Don’t worry if they get bent slightly out of shape, they can be pressed back fairly easily. Depending on the size of earrings you want, you can use a pair of scissors to cut away some of the bottom of the ghosts to make them shorter. Just try to keep a few strands uneven and long to recreate that classic ghost silhouette.
Use a pair of pliers to open the fish hook earrings. Interweave the hook into the top of the cheesecloth and close hook with pliers to finish.
You can either leave the cheesecloth ghost earrings plain or use a bit of dimensional paint to add some eyes. Allow to dry before wearing.
I absolutely love how these huge cheesecloth ghost earrings look dangling from my ears. They’re the perfect statement piece for when you don’t have a whole lot of time to devote to a costume.
