What do you do when Pottery Barn has an amazing Halloween mummy ghost but it is $99??!?! You make it yourself. I couldn’t afford to pay that much for seasonal decor but I could afford to get the items from Consumer Crafts and whip up DIY outdoor Halloween decorations myself in just minutes!
My mummy ghost DIY outdoor Halloween decorations version is above and you can compare with the Pottery Barn original below. Not an exact replica but scary enough to frighten any trick or treaters around our home.
Supplies needed to make your own hanging DIY outdoor Halloween decorations:
- Foam Head ($6.97)
- Cheese Cloth ($1.57) (I used 4 packages)
- Dark Brown Craft Paint
- Brown Tim Holtz Distress Ink
- Fishing Line
- Threaded Hook
- Scissors
- Paint Brush
Even if you need to purchase ALL of the materials above, you can make your own ghost for less than $20!
Start by wrapping one cheese cloth package around the foam head.
Take a second cheese cloth package and tie around the neck, similar to a cape.
Tie one corner of the other two cheese cloth pieces to each side of your first knot.
Now lets make it a little spooky! Start with dark brown craft paint and imitate the shading of the original skull head.
Then start rubbing various brown inks over the cheese cloth surface to replicate the aging of the original piece.
Insert a threaded hook in the top of the head. Hang your Halloween mummy ghost with fishing line on a porch or anywhere outdoors.
Tie up the “arms” of the ghost with fishing line. The arms are those cheese cloth pieces that you tied on both sides of the ghost.
Trim the bottom with scissors to give a ragged edge. I just cut into the cloth and pulled in a few places to give the appearance of the original version.
I am just going to tell you that this ghost has already scared me multiple times when I look out the sidelights of our front door! You can see in the image below how I have it tied up with the fishing line.

When my kids were still at home I used to do lots of spooky decorations, their friends got big kick out of it. They loved to come by later to try to scare us. I even miss those days when all the kids still home and had lots of fun. One year our boys and couple others dressed up as Kiss and they did excellent job with make up. I didn’t even recognize one of my own kids til he said something. We’d raid their candy bags when they got home. Shame on us. No kids around here (where we live now) at all to trick or treat so I just decorate for Fall. We used to live in San Diego area east county where our kids pretty much grew up. (all 4 of them)
Ah the good old days
