Hi Friends! One of the traditions I have been doing with my boys is making reindeer food for Santa’s reindeer to enjoy on Christmas Eve. We sprinkle a little on the ground on Christmas Eve and leave out milk and cookies for Santa. They love it and even help in the making of the reindeer food. I was looking on Pinterest and I saw the cutest reindeer washcloth. She had made a reindeer out of soap and washcloths. You can view her Reindeer Washcloth post here. I thought a similar idea would be perfect to hold reindeer food in! Want to make one (or many) of your own?
Supplies needed to make your own reindeer food burlap sacks:
- Burlap Fabric
- Red Satin Ribbon
- Hot Glue
- Wiggle Eyes
- Red Jingle Bells
- Old Fashion Oats
- Red & Green Sprinkles
- Clear Plastic Bags
- Baker’s Twine
- Reindeer Food Printable Tags < click to print
I cut 9 inch by 9 inch squares out of my burlap. I ended up making about 6 of these at first and I had a ton of burlap left over. One roll of this can make a whole lot of reindeer. I suggest that you cut out all your burlap squares first for the amount of reindeer your are making.
Reindeer Food Recipe. For the food, it is just a scoop of old fashion oats with red and green sprinkles mixed in. This is a perfect time to grab the little ones to join in on the fun!
Fill a small clear treat bag with the oats and tie with baker’s twine.
- Place the oats in the middle of your burlap square.
- Fold in half.
- Start to roll from the bottom end.
- Pull the sides up to form the ears and secure with ribbon.
Tie the ribbon in the bow and add the reindeer tag. You can download that here: Reindeer Food Tags.
Hot glue the eyes and a little red jingle bell for the nose. That is it!
I’m going to warn you now that making these little reindeer can be quite addicting. I have started making them for friends and my nephews this year.
They are taking over my craft room but they are so cute and SO easy to make! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!
Cheers!

Wonderful idea. Making these for a Christmas Fayre Fundraiser for my disabled granddaughter. Thankyou!!x
how big are the burlap squares?
9×9 inches.
I love this! I purchased burlap from JoAnns and when I went to cut it, I noticed it had a bad smell. Does all burlap smell so bad? I don’t feel right giving this gift to kids with the burlap having such a strong smell. Any suggestioons?
Yes, most burlap has a smell. Put food in food safe bags before packing in burlap.
I love these! Any chance you would be willing to personalize the bottom? Even for a cost?
How big are the bells and eyes? Trying to use them for a banquet as door prizes.
Jennie, click the colored text in the supply list. You can shop via the supply list at the beginning of each post.
Love these, they are so cute! I usually make a few sachets of reindeer food to sell at our church fete but would love to make some of these for this years fete. Is it possible to use your printable labels if I do this? Guessing not because of copyright and quite understand if this is the case.
I’m a classroom room parent and want to make these with the kids in my daughter’s 2nd grade class but I don’t want to use hot glue…can you suggest a quick drying glue or do you have another suggestion
Thanks
Tiffany
Hi Tiffany, we would try this quick dry glue: https://www.consumercrafts.com/store/details/catalog/basics-glue/ar7-2
Good luck!
You could use buttons for the eyes, and the bells have a little ‘loop’ and a bit of thread and needle instead of hot glue. You could also ‘pre-prepare’ the burlap wraps so the kids don’t get exposed to the dangerous part. One other thing you could do is use fabric paint and apint a nose and eyes on them….. just a thought.
Tori, Something must be wrong with your PDF file to print the Tags, my Printer will not print them, I even called Tec Support to see why my printer won’t print them, but found out in the process that they will not even print on plain paper, I was told it has to be the program you used, because my printer works just fine on everything else I want to print. Please fix or advise me on how to get them now.
Thank you,
Eileen
Hi Eileen, try this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7gctukAOsI3RktOLWhuZ2o0ems/view?usp=sharing
The printable is working fine on our end. Are you trying to print directly from the PDF landing page or have you downloaded the PDF and trying to print from that? It’s working both ways for us.
Have you tried printing other PDFs on your printer or just other documents?
tori- do u make these by any chance and sell them? I’m a full time working mom who is currently 9 mths pregnant with 2 little ones and I’d love to order these for my daughter’s preschool class gift. Please let me know I would be happy to pay u for the supplies and your time!
Hello from Australia.

I’ve bern making a similar recipe gir 40 plus years using my Grandmother’s recioe if Oats and Jelly crystals.
Opps sorry about typos.
I love the Reindeer Food idea. I printed out the tags but mine did not print out as legible as yours. Did you make some modifications to the tag to make it more legible?
Hi Harriet, did you use a super thick piece of cardstock or is your printer’s toner/ink completely filled? Ours turned out as shown.
This is a really cute craft! Your instructions are very well written. Thank you.
Todo, me gusta, y lo voy ha hacer, Gracias. ♡♡♡
