Like many of you, I adore the simplicity and versatility of burlap. I saw some adorable printed burlap ornaments in a catalog and decided to make my own. You can easily make several of these homemade ornaments in one sitting, and they would make lovely gifts that would be cherished for many Christmases to come!
- Burlap Fabric ($1.47)
- White Acrylic Paint ($0.77)
- Alphabet Stamps ($3.17)
- White Hemp Cord ($1.17)
- Piece of Cardstock (on hand or $0.08)
Total: $6.68 for multiple homemade ornaments!
Step 1: Use different sized alphabet stamps to spell the word “joy.” Sponge the stamp with white craft paint, and press it onto the burlap fabric. Repeat as desired.
Step 3: Burlap frays VERY easily when you sew it, so I tried two different methods for joining my two hearts. For my first ornament, I backstitched around the heart template. Before I closed the heart, I stuffed it with burlap scraps. After I had stitched around the entire heart, I cut it out.
For my second ornament, I cut out two hearts, then glued the edges together with fabric glue. This way worked well, the only drawback was it took longer to complete because I had to wait for the glue to dry.
Step 4: Use the hemp cord to blanket stitch around the edge of the ornament. When you get to the top, make a loop with the cord so you can hang the ornament.
