Handmade Gift Challenge: “Joyful” Burlap Homemade Ornaments

Christmas· Seasonal

Burlap-homemade-ornaments-Crafts-Unleashed-2Like many of you, I adore the simplicity and versatility of burlap.  I saw some adorable printed burlap ornaments in a catalog and decided to make my own.  You can easily make several of these homemade ornaments in one sitting, and they would make lovely gifts that would be cherished for many Christmases to come!

Burlap-homemade-ornaments-Crafts-Unleashed-3Supplies needed to make your own Joyful burlap homemade ornaments:

  • Burlap Fabric ($1.47)
  • White Acrylic Paint ($0.77)
  • Alphabet Stamps ($3.17)
  • White Hemp Cord ($1.17)
  • Piece of Cardstock (on hand or $0.08)

Total: $6.68 for multiple homemade ornaments!

Step 1:  Use different sized alphabet stamps to spell the word “joy.”  Sponge the stamp with white craft paint, and press it onto the burlap fabric.  Repeat as desired.

part 1Step 2:  Make a heart template out of cardstock.  Pin it onto the burlap.

traceStep 3:  Burlap frays VERY easily when you sew it, so I tried two different methods for joining my two hearts.  For my first ornament, I backstitched around the heart template.  Before I closed the heart, I stuffed it with burlap scraps.  After I had stitched around the entire heart, I cut it out.

For my second ornament, I cut out two hearts, then glued the edges together with fabric glue.  This way worked well, the only drawback was it took longer to complete because I had to wait for the glue to dry.

blanket stitch detailStep 4:  Use the hemp cord to blanket stitch around the edge of the ornament.  When you get to the top, make a loop with the cord so you can hang the ornament.

Burlap-homemade-ornaments-Crafts-Unleashed-4I think these homemade ornaments are simple and pretty.  You could easily use different stamps to spell different words, or even customize it with a name.  What a fun gift to give or receive!

I Love working with burlap and have lots on hand. This is a great way to use some it up. I’d like to try some colored burlap as well and different shapes. I’ve always made felt ornaments but I think I’ll try this too. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Your hearts are so great, love how they look with the stamping on the burlap. You did superb job, wonderful post.
After making several items with burlap I do know how it ravels and makes a mess, lol. I’m glad you mentioned how you sewed them together. I thought I might run a zigzag around the heart to hold it together then do the blanket stitch with lighter cord. My old hands don’t work too well anymore so I have to find other ways to do things. Will be interesting to see how they turn out.
I had 3 kids in 4 yrs, last two were boys. I did have another child but 6 yrs. after 3rd with new hubs. I do know what you mean about finding some way to keep yourself sane. I didn’t drive then so if I went somewhere it was by walking with the kids in a stroller. I managed to do some sewing and crafting, I was so determined. Happy Thanksgiving
