Whether you’re looking to decorate a space for yourself or for a loved one, you can never go wrong with adorable woodland creatures! There’s just something about the imagery of deer, foxes, and rabbits moving about in a moss-covered forest that adds a sense of whimsy to any decor. This woodland creatures paper mobile DIY is no exception! Follow the steps below to see just how easy it is to make and customize this sweet decor piece.
Supplies needed to make your own paper mobile DIY:
- Faux Birch Branches
- Forest Friends Craft Dies
- Craft Die Foliage
- Natural Cotton Twist Bead Cord
- Xyron Sticker Maker
- Size 16 Tapestry Needles
- Linen Burlap Ribbon
- Glue Gun
- Die Cutting Machine
- Smooth Cardstock
To begin with, let’s make the frame from the faux birch sticks. Take one of the sticks and fold in half. Use scissors and pliers to cut a 15″ section off of another stick. Cut the ends at a slight diagonal so that they’ll fit the angles of the triangle. Use hot glue to secure the horizontal stick in place.
Use die cutting machine to cut the Forrest Creatures and Leaves Die Cut shapes from your desired paper.
Repeat for each color of paper. It may look like too many cut outs for a small mobile but remember that you’ll be doubling up on each one when you sandwich the string in between them.
Lay out the pattern you want your final pieces to be in. I went with four rows and columns, alternating plants, animals and colors. It may take a while to get the perfect look you’re going for but keep shifting and alternating the shapes until you’re happy! Remember that you’ll have to keep the shapes in pairs for attaching to the string.
Remove one of each of the shapes from the pairs and run through the sticker maker.
Cut four 15″ pieces of string and lay flat on the non-adhesive shapes. Remove the coordinating sticker from paper backing and secure to matching pair, sandwiching string in between. Repeat until all shapes are hanging securely from string.
Use the large needle to thread the string through the horizontal “branch.” Even though they look like real wood, the branches are just made out of foam and paper so this is super easy to do! Remove needle, tie a knot at the end, and then pull the string back through to conceal.
Cut a 2′ section of ribbon and tie in a large bow at the top of the mobile.
How sweet would this look in a nursery or play room? It’s easy to hang on a wall using the corner of the wood frame but you could also tie a piece of string to the top if you want to hang from the ceiling.
I hope you enjoy making this paper mobile DIY as much as I did!
