I was so thrilled to see that ConsumerCrafts.com is now carrying washi tape by Martha Stewart. Although Martha doesn’t call it washi tape, it’s called paper tape, it’s basically the same thing. This paper tape is like a masking tape with the cutest designs on it. I seriously want to tape everything!
I wanted to show you this simple and quick tutorial on how to make washi tape magnets. This is a super fun and cute way to upcycle old advertisement magnets that you get in the mail.
- Martha Stewart Crafts™ Paper Tape
- Old refrigerator magnet advertisements or you can use these
- Craft Knife
- Ruler
- Cutting Mat
- Scissors
I used an old magnet that I received from a magazine advertisement as the base of my washi tape magnet.
At first I stuck the tape directly on, but realized that washi tape is extremely thin and the words were showing through.
So I pealed off the top layer of text. This may take some scraping but creates a nice base for the washi tape to stick. To help peel off the words you could use a sticky piece of duck tape.
Tape washi tape parallel to each other.
Using a craft knife and ruler, cut each strip off on a protected surface.
Trim the edges jagged with scissors. You can make the magnets varying lengths.
I just love the way these turned out. They are actually able to hold up pictures on my refrigerator very well. My next idea is to write little words on them to help my daughter learn how to spell. Wouldn’t that be so cute? I was also thinking if your child has a metal lunch box, you could write a little note for them on it also. What do you guys think? Have you used washi tape lately? Are you as hooked as I am?

Love this! Thanks for the idea–we’ve got zero magnets on our fridge right now, so I def want to try this out.
I love these! I have a little bit of a washi tape obsession (I think I’m up to 50 rolls!) and am always looking for new ideas. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
WOW! I love this idea! I am totally doing this. And maybe if I use the Pizza Delivery magnet, I will be less tempted to call it. lol.
I’m SO making these this weekend!!! LOVE them!
