Making cards is one of my favorite creative outlets. It’s a quick project so you can sneak your creative time in between naptime, busy work schedule, etc. And the end result is a gesture of kindness for someone else. That’s a win-win, for sure! I have three handmade card ideas to show you today and they all feature the ubiquitous, wonderful washi tape.
The three handmade card ideas I will show you are a thank you card, a wedding card and a general romantic card (also appropriate for a wedding!). If you are a washi tape hoarder like myself, this is a great way to use up some of those adorable patterns.
Supplies needed to make these washi tape handmade card ideas:
- Silhouette Cameo
- White Cardstock
- Washi Tape (I love this floral pattern, this striped one, and these washi tape sheets)
- Adhesive Tape Runner
- Scissors (one of my top two pairs of paper scissors!)
- Heart Shaped Craft Punch
Handmade Card Ideas #1 – Thank You Washi Tape Card
Step 1. In Silhouette Studio, create the base for your card. Whatever height you want your card, double that measurement for your base because you’ll later fold it in half. For instance, an A2 card is 5.5 x 4.25 in so you’ll create a square that is 11 x 4.25 inches.
Step 2. Download this milk carafe cutting file from Silhouette Design Store and arrange the carafes however you’d like at the bottom of the card base and cut it out. (Tip: Right click on the carafe image and select, ‘ungroup’ to move the carafes around individually). Go ahead and fold your card in half.
You could use any solid image for this project I just happen to love bottles!
Step 3. Cut an extra piece of white cardstock that will fit behind the carafe image and cover with washi tape. Trim exess tape with sharp scissors. You don’t have to be too picky with this but I did play around a little to make sure each carafe would be a single tape design.
Step 4. Lay the card base down on an extra paper and on the inside of the card, use the adhesive tape runner to cover all those little spaces between the bottles and around the edges.
Step 5. Place the washi tape paper face down onto the adhesive so it shows through on the front of the card.
Step 6. Layer several tape strips at the top of the card – this is where your sentiment will go.
Step 7. I used the print and cut feature of Silhouette Studio to create the “thank you” sentiment. I typed it out in a pretty font and used the ‘Offset’ button to create the border around the words. Then I printed and cut.
Handmade Card Ideas #2 – Wedding Washi Tape Card
Step 1. This one is so self-explanatory that I didn’t take step-by-step photos. I cut out this cake stand using my Silhouette Cameo. I used white cardstock and aqua ink but you could use any scrap of colorful cardstock. Tape it down with the adhesive tape runner.
Step 2. Place layers of matching washi tape starting with a base and moving upwards with shorter strips each layer so it looks like a wedding cake.
Step 3. Embellish. I used gold adhesive flat back pearls and scalloped ribbon.
That’s it! Super easy and cute.
Handmade Card Ideas #3 – Love Washi Tape Card
Another really simple card that is perfect for many occasions.
Step 1. Place a washi tape sheet on white cardstock (careful, these are sticky and not as easy to move around as strips of tape). Isn’t this the cutest pattern? I love these tape sheets. They are great for getting multiple shapes that complement each other but don’t match exactly.
Step 2. Use the heart craft punch to cut out two hearts.
Step 3. Embellish. Tape the hearts onto a white card base. I made a tiny bow from embroidery floss, drew ‘stitch’ marks around the two hearts, wrote out “love” at the bottom, and finished off with adhesive pearls (gold and brown).
I think the hand-drawn stitching makes this the card look the most handmade and I love it! I hope you enjoyed these handmade card ideas.
Do you also have tons of washi tape like me? What kind of projects do you like to do with washi tape?

Really cute cards, even tho I don’t have a Silhouette or Cricut can admire your creations. I just plug along hand cutting my creations, takes me little longer, most likely not as neatly cut as yours but they’ll do. Haven’t gotten into using washi tape yet. To be honest have enuf trouble figuring out how to make this machine work without adding another one to my nervous break downs, lol. Really Have great July 4th. weekend
Hand cutting is great! Washi tape designs are super cute with or without a cutting machine. I bet you can come up with some cute designs. Have a good holiday weekend!
