There is something comforting about Autumn. I love the textures and colors- and yes, it makes me a little excited to break out my hoodie collection! I really love decorating with the fall colors. I live by some gorgeous mountains, and the nature show doesn’t last as long as I would like it to. I brought the outdoors inside with a fun DIY fall home decor piece using some embossed cardstock leaves and some faux branches. I know this branch doesn’t have any bugs, and the leaves aren’t going to crumble to dust!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY fall leaf wall hanging:
- Core’dinations Tim Holtz® & Ranger® Distress 12 x 12 Paper Pack
- Faux Birch Branches
- Darice Acorn & Leaf Die Cut Shapes
- Sizzix Big Shot Embossing & Die Cutting Machine
- Jute Cord
- Core’dinations Sand It Gadget with Sandpaper
- Sewing Machine (optional)
The first thing I did was split my faux birch bundle into two bundles, three sticks per bundle. I was excited for this part- I am planning on making another winter decor piece with dangling snowflakes! Two projects from one purchase is always a bonus!
Tie three of the faux sticks together using some thick jute.
Select what colors of cardstock you want to use for your DIY fall leaves. I used three different colors, light orange, dark orange, and a mustard yellow. Trim your 12×12 pieces of cardstock into 3″ squares.
I highly suggest using these Darice acorn & leaf die cuts for your leaves. These die cuts create the shape as well as emboss realistic looking veins in the leaf shape! You can always use other dies, an electronic cutting machine or template, to cut your leaves.
Core’dinations cardstock is unique because it has a lighter shade core than the outside color of the cardstock. When this cardstock is sanded, the lighter shade really makes embossing shine!
This die looks great on the front side, AND the back side.
Take a few minutes to lightly sand the fronts and back of all of your die cut leaves.
I chose to use a sewing machine to “string” my leaves into a falling garland. You could also opt to adhere the leaves onto fishing wire or baker’s twine.
If you choose to stitch the DIY fall leaves, make sure you leave some space between each leaf.
I made strands of 5 leaves and 7 leaves.
Arrange the finished DIY fall leaves along your faux branch bundle for placement.
Adhere the leaf strands to the back side of the faux bundle.
Decide where you want to hang your colorful DIY fall decor!
I know it will be a project you will “fall” in love with!
