Sometimes the simplest storage solutions are the best ones. You need only three things to make these clever DIY storage washi tape racks for your crafty space!
Since we moved into our house about three months ago (okay – four months – I’m lying to myself only to make myself feel better), my craft room has become a bit of a dumping ground.
My desk became the hub of the space. I’d drop all sorts of things on it as I “cleaned” other rooms. The door was often shut to the craft room – out of sight, out of mind, right?
Nope. Not when crafting is your escape. And so, little by little, I’ve been working on making my craft room an organized and efficient space.
Can you believe I’m sharing this “before?” I can’t. Gah.
As I’ve worked on my craft room, little by little, I’ve found that what works best are simple and easy solutions. One of my first DIY storage projects was organizing my washi tape.
Washi tape is such a fun crafting material, and I love the scads of colours and patterns it comes in. I was keeping it in a box for a while, but I’d often either a) forget about it or b) dig through it to find a colour or pattern I thought I had.
I wanted to put it on display. Enter the DIY storage rack.
Supplies needed to make your own washi tape DIY storage solution:
I decided where I would want my washi holders, and then screwed in one screw. From there, I used the dowel and the level to determine where I would screw in the next hook.
These hooks will screw right into your drywall, and if you’re kind to them (i.e. not using them to hold much more than washi tape or ribbon), they should be fine. If you have bigger plans for your hooks, consider anchors or a larger hook.
Ensure that you give yourself a bit of dowel on either side of the hook – you don’t want it to be a precarious balancing act.
This set-up is perfect for washi tape width. They just fit onto the dowel, which you then slip into the hooks on the wall. If you were going to hang ribbon or larger tapes, you would want a larger hook. The depth from the wall is the most important factor to consider when you’re creating this type of hanging storage.
I love it! It took me only minutes to set up, and now my washi tape is ready to get its time in the limelight. This DIY storage project was not only simple, but also very inexpensive.
I love it when it works out that way.
And for inquiring minds…. here is the “current” state of the craft room.
It’s still very much a work in progress – but we’re getting there.
How do you store your crafty supplies in your office? Any DIY storage tips and tricks? I’m all ears.

Hi Tara I just have a question about washi tape. I have a really good storage system for my ribbons and washi tapes. I use trouser hangers hooked onto the front of my pantry cupboard doors. I live in a really tiny unit sdo not much storage room. Have my punches on racks on the sides of the pantry. Re the washi tape what can I do with the cheaper tape when it peels off sticky but leaves a sticky residue behind on the top of the tape below? I have some really nice tape that is spoiled by this problem. Kathryn
Thank you, Tara! Your storage idea for washi tape is exactly what I need to help me organize!
