Between the endless birthday parties, baby showers, and weddings my family seems to be attending lately, I can’t seem to keep enough gift boxes and bags on hand. So I decided to make a whole batch of these colorful faux wooden boxes with DIY paper tassels so that whenever the next party comes up, I’m ready. Well, with the gift box at least! These gift boxes are so easy and inexpensive to make that it really makes sense to make up a whole batch at once.
Supplies needed to make your own boxes with DIY paper tassels:
- Paper Mache Boxes of Any Shape or Size
- Adhesive Backed Wood Grain Veneer Sheets
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brush
- Crepe Paper Sheets
- Hot Glue
- Ribbon
Begin by painting the lids to your boxes with the paint color of your choice. Let dry.
While drying, measure your box base and cut the wood veneer sheets to fit on your box.
If you are using a hexagon or square box you will want to cut individual squares for each side. But if you are using a round box you can just cut one long strip to wrap around the side. Once you have your pieces cut, remove the paper backing and adhere the wood veneer to the box side.
You should now have something like these boxes above. You can stop here if you wish and use these boxes for both gifts and storage, or use the crepe paper folds to create simple tassels.
Just fringe cut 3″ strips of crepe paper and glue and roll into a tassel shape with a piece of ribbon looped in the middle. Overlap the first tassel with a second layer for a fun color block effect.
Once your DIY paper tassels are made, string them onto some ribbon and tie onto your gift box!
I am so glad that I made up several of these faux wooden gift boxes with DIY paper tassels in advance. Now I am ready for any party invite that comes my way! For another fun paper mache gift box idea, check out this birthday cake gift box diy!
