Back to School BackPack Identifiers

Have you ever walked up to a pile of back packs at the edge of the playground and wondered which one belonged to your child?

For safety reasons children shouldn’t have their names printed on their backpacks, so what is a grown up to do?

Backpack identifiers that allow your child to create their own unique way to identify their backpack are just the trick!

Supplies:

  • 1943-60 Darice Kids Crafts Plastic Key Chain Clips
  • 03760-4-020AB  Pony Beads Assorted Opaque AB 6x9mm – or pony bead of your choice
  • 1144-70 Black Rex Lace – or one of the 7 other colors Consumer Crafts carries

The nice thing about these is that they are really easy to make and inexpensive too. This is a great project to do with a scout troop. Just use caution around smaller children as the beads present a choking hazard.

Cut a length of Rex Lace 8-10 inches long. Fold it in half.

Push the “U” shaped fold through the ring of the key chain.

Put the two loose ends through the “U” and pull them until the “U” snugs up against the key chain.

Add beads until the identifier is as long as desired and then tie a couple of knots in the end of the rex lace. All that’s left to do now is clip it onto the backpack!

Children can make their identifier unique by using all one color beads, a “secret combination” or a pattern of colors that they choose.

Consumer crafts has lots of plastic beads (other than the pony beads shown here) so you can add letter beads, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, or even bowling.  Or you can try this mix of Acrylic and Plastic Beads here.
