Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and while it’s so easy to just purchase something for your mom, making it yourself is more thoughtful and adds more sentimental value to the gift. Today I’m sharing how easy it is to make a DIY Mother’s Day gift with some simple materials and in little time! This pendant frame necklace uses a fun crafting material – shrink plastic!
Supplies needed to make your own frame necklace DIY Mother’s Day gift:
- White Plastic Shrink Film
- Download Template (For frame and center image.)
- Die-Cutting Machine (I used my Silhouette Portrait) or Craft knife
- Jewelry Bail
- E6000 Glue
- Multi Purpose Heat Tool (Or oven)
- Finished Necklace Chain
- Jewelry Plier Set
- Paint Brush
- Sandpaper
- Acrylic Paint
- Matte Mod Podge
Step One. The begin this DIY Mother’s Day gift tutorial you will download and cut out your template. You can definitely use scissors or a craft knife for this, but I like making my life much easier with a Silhouette Portrait. If cutting using a pair of scissors, print the template, overlay your shrink plastic on top and then trace. Finally, cut it out using a pair of scissors or a craft knife.
Step Two. Use your oven or a heat gun to shrink the frame and the backing. If using an oven, follow the heat settings and time on the package. One of the best tips I have for shrinking plastic is to bake it on a flat glazed ceramic tile – it heats up evenly! I like using the oven for the first shrinking and using the heat tool to go over it if it’s curled up and need to fix it.
Step Three. Sand the top of the shrink plastic frame with fine-grit sandpaper. Paint your frame front. I was going to use acrylic paint but I decided I would go for some chalk paint.
Step Four. Measure the backing and print and cut an image you would want to put in the frame pendant. I used a simple saying for mine (it’s with the download too!) Adhere the image with Mod Podge.
Step Five. Attach the two pieces with E6000 glue, and add a coat of Mod Podge to protect the piece. Attach a jewelry bail with some more E6000 glue. Finally, thread your finished jewelry chain on the jump ring, using some jewelry pliers if necessary. And you’re done with your fabulous DIY Mother’s Day gift!
It’s an easy way to personalize a gift for your mom, friend or anyone you want to give a gift to! I know any mom would love a keepsake photo of her children or even a quote.
It’s a great DIY Mother’s Day gift project to do with kids and adults alike. I hope you were inspired by it. Happy crafting, friends!
