Today I’m sharing a simple art project that really packs a punch. Are you looking for large scale wall decor DIY that won’t break the bank? This DIY aspen tree wall hanging took about an hour to make, cost less than $10, and is hung on the wall with masking tape, so it’s a damage free way to decorate any space. And I bet you’ll never guess what it’s made of.
Supplies needed to make your own tree wall decor DIY:
- Foamies Extra Large White Foam Roll
- Craft Paint (Black or Dark Grey)
- Paint Brush
- Scissors
- Yardstick
- Masking Tape
Begin by unrolling the foam sheet and taping it to a hard surface to keep it flat. Using a yardstick, draw a 3 inch border around the outside edges. Then draw your aspen trees. I looked up a picture online to use as a reference. I found that I had a hard time distinguishing between the trees and the background, so I colored my trees in a little bit to ensure I didn’t make any mistakes when cutting.
Cut out the negative space with a pair of scissors. Keep the outside border intact.
Use a bit of craft paint to add knots and bark details to the trees. Try to make them look random. Don’t overthink it.
Carefully add loops of masking tape to the back of the foam wall decor DIY, then tape it up on the wall.
I love how this wall decor DIY art project turned out. The trees don’t quite sit flat against the wall, so it gives the whole project just the right amount of dimension. Plus that’s a BIG piece of art for less than $10. The finished size is 3 feet by 5 feet! I don’t think people would ever guess what it’s made of just by looking at it. I wish I’d had something so cool when I was living in my college apartment!

This would be cute done with a simple frame and a intresting background to look like a window above the furniture
That’s a great idea Peggy! I’ve been thinking about adding a thick wood frame around it just to make it pop even more.
Oh wow! What a creative way to decorate your walls with little expense! The beauty of this is that you don’t have to be a perfect cutter. The rough edges only bring realism to the trees. Thanks for sharing 🙂
