I am absolutely in love with the look of white artwork on black canvas. Thanks to the awesome selection of black canvas and white vinyl on Consumer Crafts, making this trendy artwork is a breeze! You’re more than welcome to use the “Sun & Moon” artwork I designed especially for this post or come up with your own design for a one-of-a-kind easy DIY canvas piece. So many ways to make this project uniquely “you!”
Materials needed to make this Sun & Moon easy DIY canvas:
- Stretched Black Canvas
- Siser White Heat Transfer Vinyl
- Cutting Machine (I used a Cricut Maker but the SVG file will work with any digital cutting machine)
- EasyPress 2 or Iron
- “Sun & Moon” Free SVG File
Before you can start working with the supplies for this easy DIY canvas, you’ll need to download the “Sun & Moon” Free SVG file. Just click on the link in the supply list above and a new tab will open. Don’t worry if you’re unable to preview the file, just click “download” to save to your computer. Open your digital cutting machine platform (I used Design Space) and upload the downloaded SVG file. Now you just have to send the design to your cutting machine and you’re good to go!
Use the recommended settings to cut the “Sun & Moon” file from the white vinyl. Don’t forget to reverse the image for heat transfer vinyl! Remove from cutting machine when the cut is done. Use a weeding tool to remove excess vinyl from the design. Take care when weeding since most of the lettering is pretty thin and can tear easily. I figured out the hard way!
Important: Use either a small EasyPress heating pad or folded up towels to fit inside the back frame of the canvas. You want to make sure the heated surface of an EasyPress or iron presses up against a solid form instead of just pushing down on the stretched canvas. Follow the recommended heating instructions for the vinyl.
Once the vinyl has cooled a bit, you can remove the transfer film. With as many projects as I’ve made with my Cricut, this step is still so exciting to me!
Your artwork is ready to be hung up and enjoyed! I can’t wait to see all the amazing art you make with these black canvases!
