My extra large DIY home art is perfect for those on a budget that need a WOW factor in their home. Make this large scale home art easily and add to any room in your home. Don’t love the word “HOME?” Vary it up to the word of you choice. Perhaps “LOVE” is more your style? Or “WOW?” Whichever word you choose, follow along with the instructions below on how to customize this home art to your style.
Supplies needed to make your own extra large DIY home art:
- 23.5 inch LARGE letters of your choice
- Stencils of your choice (shown are eyelet lace and Moroccan tile from PLAID)
- FrogTape Painter’s Tape
- White Paint
- Stencil Brush
- Paint Brush
- Hot Glue Gun
- 3 inch Chipboard Letters – 2 packages (optional)
I will go through each of the four letters I painted separately as I did them each in a different pattern. You can vary up the methods of the letters or even do yours all the same. (NOTE: I used a drop cloth under my letters. These are HUGE and you are probably going to have to paint them on the floor.)
First up is a striped letter. If you would like all of your stripes the same and uniform, then go for it. However, I wanted mine more rustic and random. I applied the painter’s tape at random intervals as shown below.
I then painted my “stripes” but not in every spot. That way the spacing would look random as well and not just look like the width of the painter’s tape. On this letter and all of the below, I used a very dry brush when painting (not much paint on the brush). This also gave a more rustic look to the art. Just remove the FrogTape as soon as you are done painting your stripes.
The next letter is a Moroccan tile pattern and this was done by overlapping a stencil made by PLAID until the entire letter was filled in. I used that same dry brush to add in a rustic feel.
Next up is a different stencil technique. I used the eyelet lace stencil in a variety of places around the letter to add a doily effect. This is a completely random pattern.
And last is possibly the easiest. Just use a dry brush all over your letter to give a rustic appearance with no fuss.
Now we have to get those four letters together into some home art. Allow them all to dry completely before touching. I worked on the floor for this step as these letters are HUGE! I placed them into the shape I wanted, tweaking the spacing and placement. I then used a hot glue gun anywhere the letters touched each other to hold them together.
I keep saying these letters are HUGE but just how big are they? Take a look at the picture below and that mason jar. Yep that is a quart jar and it looks mini in comparison with this extra large art. See what a bargain this is?
I added my home art to the top of my barn wood mantel and it almost reaches the ceiling! Now that is a statement piece! I decorated my mantel in the same brown and white color scheme while I was at it. I love the results!
If you want to add a little optional accessory to your art, add “sweet home” or another sentiment in a smaller banner with chipboard letters. For me this made the entire mantel!
I hope this has your head spinning with ideas for your own HUGE and affordable DIY art. You can make a large scale statement in your home for a small amount of money.
