Do you have a kid that’s on their way to live in a college dorm in a few months? I’ve got the perfect project to help decorate their new digs! This fashion paint pillow DIY tutorial can be customized in so many different ways that it’s absolutely perfect for any personality and style type. Since it’s made with only a few craft supplies, your aching pocket book won’t mind either!
Supplies needed to make your own custom pillow DIY:
- Marabu Spray Art Paint
- Throw Pillow Cover
- 16″ x 16″ Square Throw Pillow
- Stencil
- Krylon Easy-Tack Repositionable Adhesive
I decided to use a stencil that I had in my craft supplies but Consumer Crafts has tons of great stencils to choose from! Apply spray adhesive to the back of your desired stencil. The spray adhesive will totally help keep the plastic stencil in place so that you don’t have to worry about any of the paint seeping underneath the borders.
First things first, you’re going to want to either protect your working space with tons of newspaper or take this project outside. This pillow DIY isn’t hard to make but it can be messy! Begin by spraying a fine mist of color onto the pillow cover. I highly suggest doing a few practice sprays off to the side before attempting on your pillow cover. Apply a couple of sprays in a row if you want more concentrated colors. Don’t worry too much about the “perfect look.” Some of the worst mistakes end up looking the best!
After you’re happy with the over all coverage, you can start adding a few extra details. I took off the caps and then used them to splatter some paint here and there. Love how it created a different look each time!
If desired, you can even use the bottle cap tube as sort of a paint brush and add detail that way as well!
Carefully peel up the stencil and place off to the side.
Allow pillow cover to dry completely before inserting your pillow form.
What a gorgeous addition this fashion paint custom pillow will be to any dorm room! Switch up the stencil and paint colors and you’ve got a completely different look.
I would highly suggest adding some sort of fabric stain protector spray to this pillow DIY before using. Any soiled sections that don’t easily wipe away will need to be spot cleaned. Hope you have fun making this pillow!
