I love nautical decor. Even though I don’t own a boat, or spend much time upon one, I think that all-things-boat-ish scream summertime. And so, when I was thinking of a way to add a bit of summer charm to the mantel-scape, I immediately started dreaming of a nautical inspired DIY burlap wreath.
I’m a blogger. We do wreaths. It’s in the rule book.
I was playing with my burlap ribbon and realized that I had the supplies to make a life preserver DIY burlap wreath – in five minutes!
Supplies needed to make your own nautical DIY burlap wreath:
- 12″ Styrofoam Wreath Form.
- Ivory Burlap Ribbon.
- Red Burlap Ribbon.
- Wooden Anchor Shape.
- Corsage Pins.
- Hot Glue.
I started by wrapping my wreath form in the white burlap ribbon. I made sure to keep the ribbon tight as I wound it around the form. It was easily secured with a corsage pin on the back of the DIY burlap wreath.
To get the life preserver appearance, I cut approximately 2′ lengths of the red burlap and then wrapped it around the wreath in four separate “corners” of the circle.
I secured each stripe with a corsage pin. You could use a glue gun, but I find this method works quite well and allows for any fussing or repositioning of the ribbon.
At this point, the DIY burlap wreath can be embellished however your heart desires. I had these wonderful wooden anchor shapes just waiting to be glued onto the wreath.
I considered painting them, but the raw wooden colour matched the burlap quite nicely.
Five minutes (or maybe seven) in total, and the wreath was done! It’s a colourful piece that works perfectly with your summer decor.
You might recognize some of the other pieces of my summer mantel-scape…
… the blue mason jar, the rustic wooden star…
…and the painted mason jars from this utensil caddy project.
If you want to add a colourful and seasonal accent to your decor, grab a wreath form and some burlap ribbon and get to work!
You’ll be surprised at how quickly you’re finished!
