Spring Craft Challenge: DIY Mossy Heart Door Decor

Home Decor· Spring· Wall Art

I’m not really a big wreath person.  I don’t have anything against them, it’s just never been my “thing”. I do like door decor, however, and I love to see how people come up with unexpected ways to decorate their front doors:  frames, umbrellas, balloons, etc.  Here is my contribution to the world of wreath alternative door decor:  a spring-inspired, mossy heart!

Supplies Needed to Make Your Own Mossy Heart Door Decor: supply2

  • 8 Inch Wood Pennant
  • Galvanized Craft Chicken Wire Netting
  • Mossy Twig Vine Garland
  • Wired Sisal Vine
  • Green Paint
  • Butterfly
  • Glue Gun

Step 1:  Paint the 8 in. wood pennant green.  Trace the pennant on card stock, and draw two circles on top to make a heart shape.  This is the template I used to make my heart shape.

Step 2:  Tie the twine to the pennant as pictured.

Step 3:  Place the heart template under the wood pennant to use as a guide.  Cut the moss wire into strips and use a hot glue gun to make the heart shape.

Keep adding more moss wire until the heart shape is full. It should look something like this:

step 3

Step 4:  Cut the chicken wire so it is larger than the heart template.  Place it on the front of the moss heart, and carefully fold the edges back to “wrap” the heart shape.

step 4

Step 5: Twist any overlapping ends of the wire together to secure it around the back of your pennant. You can also try hot gluing the wire to the back of your pennant if it won’t stay in place.

step 5

Step 6:  Hot glue the butterfly onto the front of your wire, or anywhere you please.

The end result is a very country chic piece of door decor.  It would also be cute on a wall or even on a mantle, maybe next to some pretty flowers.  Have fun crafting and creating!

Love this! I just made a chicken wire “quilt” that I’m putting on my porch and this will go with the decor perfectly!

I see now that the netting is part of the chicken wire description. I thought it was that green roll that looks like ribbon, what is that and where is that used?
      Sorry for all the confusion.

I didn’t use the green ribbon in my project. The challenge was to use at least three of those items, and that was the only one I didn’t manage to fit in!

This is so cute! Did you use all the moss to make one? I’m wanting to make 3 and I just wanted to know how much I should buy.

Thank you! Yes, I used nearly all the moss to make it. I only had about 4 inches left when I was done. I hope that helps!

Love heart and floral sconce chicken wire projects, both are fantastic. Now if I could find chicken wire somewhere besides Tractor Supply or someplace like that. I don’t want a whole blinking roll, just want enuf to make simple projects. Both projects are so nice looking.
You make it look so easy. Where did you find the pennant shapes and chicken wire? We were just at Michaels this afternoon, looks like they don’t carry Darice products. I asked and got nothing but a blank stare. Who, what? I get kinda disgusted in Grand Junction, they don’t seem to keep up on newer products and ideas, even the managers. Happy weekend

Hi JaneEllen! You can click on the items in the supply list to find the exact items I used. The craft chicken wire at Consumer Crafts is perfect: the right size for crafting, and easier to cut and bend. I think you’ll love it!
