Supplies needed to make your own DIY summer decor:
- Unfinished Wooden Painting Panel
- Chalk Paint (in different colors)
- Paint Brushes
- Hot Glue Gun
- Jute Twine
- Wood Stain (optional)
- Drill
Step 1. Sand your painting panel, wipe it down once, and then paint with your base color of choice. I wanted a stained-looking board so I mixed some paints together to create the stain color I liked. You can also use actual stain for this step.
Step 2. Next, you will want to paint the frame (and the backside as well, if you want). I chose a calm, blue chalk paint for the frame for mine.
Step 3. This is where it gets a bit tricky – you will want to sketch out a pair of flip flops. It may be helpful to look up some images online and practice before sketching it onto your actual painted frame. You can also use a stencil. After sketching, fill it in with your desired paint color and let dry.
Step 4. Mark and drill three holes where your twine is going to go. Thread from the bottom to the top.
Step 5. To secure the ends, tie a knot on the topmost hole of the flip flop using one end of the string, and secure the other end of the string on the back with hot glue.
Step 6. Finally, trim and decorate. To hide the roughly-finished edges where the stain meets the colored frame, I trimmed it with some more jute twine. I also added a die-cut word using some vinyl and my Silhouette machine. And presto – your DIY summer decor is done!
That’s how easy this DIY summer decor is! While you’re in flip flop mode, we think these cute flip flop earrings would be perfect to craft after this one!
