Let’s be honest. The hardest part about my tutorial today was finding a picture of my husband and myself that wasn’t terrible in some way! Clearly we don’t hand the camera off enough to get photos of the two of us together. Mental note. I really loved the sentiment of this embossing folder. I wanted to incorporate it into a DIY quote frame piece for my home.
I am also planning on using it for wedding cards- if you needed additional justification to pick this embossing folder up!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY quote frame:
- 2-Opening 5×7 Flat Collage Picture Frame
- Silver Foil Cardstock
- Together Is Our Favorite Embossing Folder
- Embossing Machine
- Jet Black Ink Pad
- Core’dinations Sand It Set
- 3-D Dots Pop-Up Adhesive Foam Strips
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Paper Towel
I also used a fun technique that I will walk you through today.
Did you know that you can make metallic cardstock look like aged, tooled pewter?
Let me show you how!
Trim silver metallic cardstock to 4″x6″, and 5″x7″ pieces.
Insert the 4×6 piece into your embossing folder, facing upwards.
Following the manufacturer directions for your embossing machine, run the cardstock through the machine.
Remove the embossed piece and go over the entire surface of the embossed image with black Staz-on ink. It must be Staz-on ink. Other inks will not dry on metallic cardstock surfaces.
Dampen a paper towel with a little bit of rubbing alcohol.
Rub the surface of the embossed image with a circular motion. You are trying to work the ink into the outlines of the letters.
You can see that the image is beginning to look aged. Keep working the ink until you like the look, and the letters pop.
Run the ink pad lightly over the surface a second time.
Then, using a Sand-it Gadget, lightly sand the embossed image, to knock some of the ink off , and make the embossed areas really pop.
When you are finished working the image, it will look like tooled pewter.
Ink the edges of your second piece of silver 5×7 cardstock.
Using 3 Dimensional adhesive, attach the embossed piece to the 5×7 piece.
This gives your project dimension, so it will look like a metal plaque in your frame.
Remove the frame backing. Discard the glass piece. Take out the mat piece. Both openings in this double frame measure 5×7″.
Insert a 5×7 photo into one side, and your finished embossed piece into the opposite side.
Reinsert the mat into the frame. Replace the backing.
Now just find a spot to hang your new and sentimental DIY quote frame wall art!
