After the holidays are over, it’s so hard to take down the decorations, isn’t it? Don’t you want to keep them up just a little bit longer? Well, to help with that, I always create a wintry wreath to hang on the front door. This year, I decided to make a DIY photo display wreath that’s more personal. It features photos of my beautiful snow-covered town and family!
This is a great way to display your holiday memories! I’ll show you how I made my family photo wreath this year. (I use the term “wreath” loosely, as you’ll see!)
Supplies needed to create your own DIY Photo Display wreath:
- Embroidery Hoop (I used 12″ but the smaller 6″ hoops would be adorable!)
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Double Sided Tape Runner and/or Masking Tape or a Glue Gun
- Twine
- Ribbon
- Small Photos (I printed 3″ wide photos on my home printer)
- Glitter Letter Stickers
- Embellishments (buttons, paper hearts, adhesive pearls, etc)
Step 1. To begin your DIY photo display, you will cut your scrap fabric into 1 inch wide strips, any length you have will do. Feel free to mix up the colors! I used two different fabrics.
Step 2. Begin wrapping a strip of fabric onto one side of the embroidery hoop. As that strip finishes, wrap the next strip around it so the last strip is secure without using any adhesive. Keep doing this until you wrap the entire hoop.
Step 3. Finish the fabric wrapping by gluing the last piece down. You can use a glue gun or a double sided adhesive tape runner.
Step 4. Now wrap the other side of the hoop in a coordinating color in the same manner as you did the first. Loosen the screw at the top of the hoop (a lot!) and place the smaller hoop inside. You have created the frame for your DIY photo display wreath.
Step 5. Place a piece of twine at the top of the hoop, between both sides. Now this part takes a little maneuvering. You’ll hold the top of the two sides together with one hand. With the other hand, wrap twine around the inside hoop. Basically, you need to hold the tension so the twine stays taut. Once you have as many twine passes as you like, push the hoops together.
Alternately, you could tape the twine down at the top, wrap the twine around with both hands, keeping tension the whole time, then remove the tape once you’re done.
Step 6. Now tighten the screw down until it feels very secure.
Step 7. If you want to embellish your DIY photo display with words, place the alphabet stickers onto a piece of paper and cut out squares around the words. I chose to use ‘family’ and ‘love.’
Step 8. Now add photos and extra embellishments to the twine. Lots of the little photos stayed on with a strip of double sided adhesive from the tape runner on the back of the photo. But some of them, especially the bigger ones, required a bit of masking tape on the back. You could also use mini clips or clothespins to attach your photos to the twine.
Step 9. Finish the your DIY photo display off with a pretty bow! Tie your ribbon into a bow, glue onto the top of the hoop with a glue gun or double sided adhesive. Then, to make it extra special, I put little strips of double sided adhesive along the sides of the hoop and stuck the ribbon onto the adhesive. This way you can add a little body or movement to the ribbon, as seen in the photo.
That’s it! The best part about this DIY photo display decoration is that it can be customized with any color or style. For another photo display option, check out this burlap and canvas DIY photo holder.
What memories would you capture and display on your family photo wreath?
