Love the minimal look of hanging pendant lights but don’t want to pay the hefty price tag that usually accompanies them? Why not make your own DIY lighting with this easy tutorial that converts basic craft supplies into an awesome, on-trend lamp!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY lighting pendant:
- 8ft Pendant Light Cord & Socket with Rotary Switch
- Unfinished Wood Hexagon Cup Holder
- Caron® Simply Soft Yarn (I used Watermelon)
- Double Sided Hercules Tape™
- La D’ore Composition Gold Leaf
- Light Bulb
- Drill/Drill Bits
Step One. In order to create the wood tube for this lamp, you’re going to have to remove the bottom base of the pencil holder. There may be a small gap in between the wood pieces that you can use a small hammer to wedge the pieces apart. If not, a strong push through the pencil holder with the hammer should loosen it a bit.
Step Two. Beginning at the base of socket, wrap the cord using a basic friendship bracelet method. Not sure if you remember how? This DIY shamballa bracelet is a great tutorial to remind you! Depending on how much of the cord you want covered, this step could potentially take you quite a while. You could always just do a small section of the cord or pop in a good movie and wrap the whole thing!
Step Three. You can decorate the wood tube to match any decor. I love the look of gold on natural wood (another trendy look!) so I just used some super strong double sided tape and gold leaf to make basic stripes down the sides. Another option would be to paint the tube or just leave it bare.
Step Four. After your cord is wrapped, drill a hole in the side of the wood tube large enough for the rotary switch. Hang the lamp inside of the tube, aligning the on/off switch with the hole and screw the rotary handle back in place. All that’s left to do is to add a light bulb (Maximum 150 watt (120v) light bulb) and hang your new DIY lighting in place!
I love that this DIY lighting incorporates a few of my favorite trends right now (pendant lights, gold on wood, and bright colors) but honestly, you can do so much to customize this piece to match any decor.
I’d love to see all the fun and different DIY lighting you all come up with!

I love this! You could also do photo transfer onto the wood which could make it super cute and personal. Also you could burn designs (fishtail is the new chevron) onto the cup with a wood burning took.
Ooo, I love that wood burn idea!
