I am absolutely crazy about all the nautical decor I’ve been seeing everywhere lately. From driftwood to weathered oars, nothing says “summer” quite like nautical decor! Whether you’re planning a Bon Voyage party or looking for decorations for your beach house (I wish!), this nautical DIY flag garland is tons of fun to make!
Supplies needed to make your own nautical DIY flag garland:
- Natural Wood Craft Blocks
- Jute Cording
- Americana Decor Chalky Paint in:
- Washi Tape
- Core’dinations Sand It Set
- Drill
Step One. Apply a solid coat of white paint to all of the blocks. I didn’t want my garland to be too long so I used 9 blocks. You can increase or decrease the amount of blocks if you want a longer or shorter garland.
Step Two. Do an online search for “nautical flags” and pick which ones you’ll be recreating. I went with a variety of shapes and colors that I knew were going to be easy to recreate on each block. Keep your lines nice and crisp by blocking off your painting area with washi tape. It’ll create clean lines and can be removed easily when done.
Step Three. Allow paint to dry completely and then drill holes into the sides of the painted DIY flag cubes.
Step Four. (optional) If you’re going for a weathered natural look, lightly sand the edges and surface of the cubes to expose the white paint underneath.
Step Five. Cut a strand of jute to the size you want your DIY flag garland to be. (Mine was approximately 32″ long.) Take a strip of washi tape and wrap tightly around the end of the jute cording. This will prevent the cording from unraveling and make it rigid enough to easily slide through holes.
Step Six. Use knots to keep the wooden cubes in place. You’ll have to tie one before you slide on your cube and then tie another one after.
Hope you enjoyed this easy tutorial on how to make a nautical DIY flag garland! As I mentioned above, you can make it as short or as long as you want by increasing/decreasing the amount of cubes.
You many not be anywhere near a beach but at least you can enjoy some nautical fun!
Keep the nautical theme going with this beachy DIY driftwood wreath!

Love this project, think will make it to go on our front porch to snazzy up a bit with our pretty aqua chairs and table. Been doing bit more this year to cheer both back deck and front porch. This garland will be so pretty might have to use it in house some of the time. Love the colors you used, so cheerful.
We bought a grill gazebo at Lowes couple weeks ago for back deck to enjoy, Our daughter gave us a cute fold up aqua table for under gazebo with chairs. Our deck isn’t big enuf for big cover so we decided to use what we could. Putting that up has fueled more ways for us to pretty up deck area.
So glad you shared this project.
Enjoy rest of week
