After creating the little Gingerbread House Nightlight for Christmas in July, I was hooked on the meditative painting of little birdhouses. I decided to use my gingerbread house as the jumping off point and create a whole DIY birdhouse city.
Consumer Crafts has a whole line of adorable little wooden crafts and a variety of little birdhouses in particular. I chose my favorites, but you should check out the whole selection HERE. If you are looking for houses in particular HERE is a whole selection of them for you!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY birdhouse city:
- Gingerbread House Supplies
- Small Wooden Church
- Small House with Star
- Medium House with Star
- Medium sized Double Decker Birdhouse
- Green Paint with Chalky Finish
- Grey Paint with Chalky Finish
- Rusted Metal Sheet
- Wood Stain in Walnut and Foam Brushes
Start with your walnut stain since the paint will go over the stain, but the stain cannot go over the paint.
See those little triangular “roofs?” They are simply made from cutting a rusted metal sheet in half (just with regular scissors!) and bending it. The metal is strong, but lightweight, making it easy to work with.
To keep the DIY birdhouse city in one piece and to save my garden from having random wood houses blowing around it in every thunderstorm, I attached all the houses to a thin piece of plywood. I stained it with the same walnut stain that is on the DIY birdhous city. They are simply hot glued on and have been solid through wind and rain thus far.
