Today we have a quick and easy project that is perfect for any room in your home. Metallic paper can be used for decorating paper mache letters for an ultra cool look. Here we spelled CREATE but you can pick up paper mache letters to spell any word you would like. Follow along as we show you our step by step tutorial for decorating paper mache letters for the home.
Supplies needed for decorating paper mache letters:
- Paper Mache Letters (I used the 12 inch variety. If you go any larger you will have to piece together the 12″ paper.)
- Core’dinations Tim Holtz Metallic Paper
- Craft Chalk Paint (I used Chalky Finish in Smitten)
- Craft Scissors
- Craft Knife Set
- Foam Paint Brush
- Mod Podge
Start by painting the sides of each letter with a paint brush. I also recommend doing around the outer edge of the front surface as well. That way if you don’t cut your paper exactly, your letter will still look great!
I used two coats of paint on each letter allowing to dry in between coats. Allow the letters to dry completely before continuing. Pick out the metallic paper that you want to use on your letters while you are waiting. I chose a copper color but there are a variety of metallic finishes in the paper pack.
Turn the letters upside down on the BACK of the metallic paper. The back side of the paper is kraft paper. Trace around each letter with a pencil.
Use a pair of scissors to carefully trim around your pencil lines.
If there is an inner portion to the letter, like on the “R” below, use a craft knife to trim around the pencil lines. I used a cutting mat but you can also use an old magazine to protect your work surface.
Test fit each letter with the paper and make sure your cuts are correct. Then use Mod Podge on the BACK (kraft side) of the paper only. Apply a thin coat and turn the metallic paper over onto your letter. Press down firmly to adhere. Be sure that you do not have Mod Podge on your hands as you don’t want to get any on the metallic surface. Use a rag to press down if needed to keep everything clean.
I allowed my letters to dry upside down and used objects to weigh everything down. Allow to dry completely.
You can then set your letters around your home or use command adhesive to put them on the wall. I tried to capture that metallic shine with my camera. It looks amazing in person and is just what my craft room needed!
