Tapestries and wall hangings are a big trend in home decor and so much fun to make! This crochet DIY wall hanging is a great way to create something beautiful for your home and practice a variety of crochet stitches at the same time.
I have been swooning over the beautiful woven tapestries and pieces of fiber art that have been coming back into style recently. There are so many beautiful things you can do with yarn and fiber, and while I love a good weaving project, crochet has always been my first love, so of course, I had to try my hand at a crocheted version of the wall hanging trend.
The piece I came up with is easy to make and works up pretty quickly. It has lots of different types of stitches so it’s almost a bit of a crochet sampler. All these different stitches work together to create interesting shapes and texture.
I love the way it turned out, and if you decide to make your own crochet DIY wall hanging, I hope you will love it too!
Supplies needed to make your own crochet DIY wall hanging:
- 12″ Wooden Dowel
- 9.00 mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn in three colors (I used Caron One Pound Yarn in Pale Green, Caron Simply Soft in Dark Sage, and Darice Folklore in White)
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
Step One – Crochet Wall Hanging.
This DIY wall hanging is crocheted from top to bottom in rows. I started by crocheting the first row around the dowel, so the crocheted piece is already attached to the rod and ready to hang when you are done.
The three yarns I used weren’t all exactly the same weight, so I had to make some adjustments. The Darice Folklore yarn and the Caron One Pound yarn are both a bit thicker than the Caron Simply Soft yarn, so to keep my stitches about the same size, I held two pieces of Caron Simply Soft together to crochet those sections (the dark green in my piece pictured here). If you use yarn that is all the same weight, you shouldn’t have to do this. I also used a larger hook to accommodate the thicker yarn and keep my piece from being too stiff, but you may need to adjust your hook size based on the yarn you use.

When you are all done crocheting your DIY wall hanging, it’s time to add tassels! I used the soft green color (Color A) for my tassels and cut off 9 lengths of yarn, looped them through one of the chain 2 spaces on the final row and pulled tight to form the tassel.
Finally, trim your tassels to create nice clean edges. I cut mine in a tiered shape so the middle tassel is the longest, and I like the shape it gives my DIY wall hanging.
And that’s it! Your DIY wall hanging is all ready to hang. I love the color and texture it adds to my space.

I haven’t finished but you have switched up your instructions in your special stitches section for the 3 dc cluster and the 5 dc cluster. The 3 dc cluster ends saying to pull through 6 loops but that should be for the 5 dc cluster.
Also I’m pretty sure row 14 is wrong, I think it should read something like *sc, skip 2 sts, 5 dc shell cluster in next st* but I’m still having a problem getting the right amount of stitches to fit into the 30 st row below.
