I think we all need a designated spot to stash our car keys right when we walk through the door. I have teenage drivers, and we spend a lot of “last minute scrambling” searching for misplaced keys. My priority for this project was to have a key hanger. My wish list was something that I could store the clutter that usually ends up under a magnet on the fridge, and possibly a message center. Well, guess what? I was able to incorporate all three in this handy chalkboard DIY entryway organizer!
- Chicken Wire Frame with Chalkboard Top
- Unfinished Wood Planter Box
- Decorative Resin Knob (3)
- Darice Craft Wood Glue
- Multi-Surface Painter’s Tape
- Press and Seal Plastic Wrap
- White Spray Paint
- Black Spray Paint
- Standard Drill and Drill bit
On my chalkboard DIY organizer I used a fun paint technique that makes a very aged, chippy paint look. I am going to show you how to do this. You can choose to paint your project any way you like. The wood could also simply be stained. It is really up to the decor in your home- it’s easy to customize with color, or different knobs.
The first thing you will want to do is prepare your wooden surfaces for painting. I lightly sanded any rough edges and removed any stickers. I did not want to paint the chicken wire or the chalkboard surface, so I used press and seal plastic wrap to cover the larger areas of the chicken wire, and edged it with painters tape.
Using spray paint, coat the chicken wire frame and planter box black. (I only took photos of the stages of painting with the chicken wire frame, but the planter box was painted the same way, at the same time.) Allow the paint to fully dry.
I am not going to lie. At this step of the project, I thought I was going to have to toss the whole thing into the trash! The paint was really ugly looking. I had to coat it a couple of times, to completely cover the black and then it looked globby and awful.
Don’t toss it just yet. 🙂 Let the paint completely dry.
Then, using paper towels or other disposable cloths begin wiping the entire project. The white paint is going to come off where the Vaseline was applied, and leave behind the black finish.
Add a generous amount of wood glue to the bottom and both sides of the planter box.
Now you are ready to hang your chalkboard DIY entryway organizer! You have a message center at the top, chicken wire in the middle to hold coupons, photos and miscellaneous papers.
I am really excited to be just a little more organized, in such a beautiful way at my house. I hope you are inspired to give this project a try! If you find yourself needing a few more spots to store and organizer smaller items, consider making and hanging this DIY wall organizer next to your new chalkboard entryway storage. It could be painted with the same finishing technique used in this tutorial so the pieces match.
