Spring is coming, right? I am very much looking forward to some color in my yard! It is time for the crocuses to start making an appearance, and until they do, I am displaying flowers inside my house, with this adorable apothecary tube DIY flower wall decor. This wall hanger display was easy to create and I absolutely love how it turned out!
Supplies needed to make your own DIY flower wall decor:
- Plastic Bead Storage Tubes
- Unfinished Wooden Painting Panels
- 6 inch Wooden Ruler (3)
- Americana Gloss Enamels Craft Paint in: White Enamel, True Red, Yellow Enamel, and Desert Turquoise
- Tim Holtz Walnut Brown Distress Spray Stain
- Crop-a-dile or other Heavy Duty Hole Punch
- Core’dinations Sand It Gadget or Sandpaper
- Colored Craft Wire
- Hot Temp Glue Gun
The first thing you will want to do for this DIY flower wall decor tutorial is paint your wooden panel and your three rulers. Choose the colors you like. I went with white, teal, red and yellow. You only need one coat of paint, and it doesn’t even need to be a good coat.
Allow the paint to dry, and then hit the panel and rulers with sandpaper. Rough up the edges in particular.
Water down some walnut colored stain and coat the sanded wood.
You can decide how much stain you want depending on the level of distress you want your finished DIY flower wall decor to have. Make sure you let the stain settle into the sanded edges.
On the rulers- get the stain down into the numbers on the rulers.
Use a dry cloth to wipe away the excess stain.
When you are happy with the look of your stained wood, set them aside to dry.
When the stain is dry, make two marks on the rulers at the 2 1/2″ line. This will be for the wire to thread through to hold the plastic tubes to the rulers.
Using a Crop-a-dile, or other heavy duty hole punch, create two holes for the wire.
Remove the lids from the plastic bead tubes and wrap tubes with wire, leaving about an inch or two on both sides of the tube. Thread the wire through the holes in the ruler, and twist to secure the wire on the back side of the ruler.
You will really want the wire tight. I used a pair of small-tipped pliers to twist the wire right up against the wood of the ruler. Trim the excess wire.
Using a generous amount of hot glue, cover the back of the ruler, and adhere the ruler to the wooden panel.
Hold the hot glue in place until it sets. Repeat for each ruler.
Using a straw, fill each tube with water, and add cut flowers. You could skip the water, and add artificial flowers instead.
Either way, it is a beautiful and rustic piece of DIY flower wall decor that is sure to help you welcome spring.
