I love giving handmade gifts to people but I also love giving gift cards and other practical gifts. Well, now you can give both thanks to this decorative DIY wooden gift box idea. Paint a small wooden box and add a decorative knob for the most creative way to wrap gift cards, jewelry, and other small gifts.
Oh, and these gift boxes cost around $5 to make which is about the same price as a nice gift bag with tissue paper – but way prettier. Plus, they can use the box to hold jewelry or small trinkets making it a double gift. Woohoo! A practical and decorative gift all in one.
Supplies needed to make your own DIY wooden gift box:
- Assorted Wooden Boxes
- Unfinished Wood Box
- Flower Ceramic Knob
- Decorative Glass Knob
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Screwdriver
- Drill with Drill Bit
- Hacksaw
First, use a small screwdriver to remove the latch and hinges from the wooden boxes and paint the boxes using your favorite paint colors. I recommend at least two coats of paint.
Trim the end of the drawer knobs so they are about 1/2 -3/4 inch long using the hacksaw (This will depend on how thick the box lids are). Drill a hole in the center of the wooden box lids and attach decorative knob to the lid.
Reassemble hardware to wooden boxes.
Now, you’re ready to fill your decorative DIY wooden gift box with a gift card and other small gifts. The bigger box would be perfect for a scarf, makeup, and so much more. The smaller box is the perfect size for a gift card or a pair of earrings.
Isn’t this a fun way to gift wrap small gifts? They’re stylish and fun and you gotta love an easy craft project that takes less than and hour to make. I was actually able to make two in less than an hour. Not only will the recipient receive a gift inside the box but they’ll also have something they can use around the house long after the holidays are over.
This might be my new favorite craft project. Holiday gift wrapping just got better. Now I’m off to paint more wooden boxes and order more decorative knobs so I can make more Decorative Wooden Gift Boxes.

love your idea. I’ve always had a weakness for boxes but I’m “selfish” I paint and keep them for myself. I have a grand time going to Flea Mkts. and thrift shops and getting unusual boxes and repainting them (love the chalk paint) or if they are a natural walnut especially, I perk it up with Restore-A-Finish and am usually amazed what comes up. I’m a decorative painter so paint every kind of box Except Birds Eye Maple and Black Walnut. They have their own beauty.
