Today I have a fun craft idea that would make a perfect Mother’s Day gift. I created a cute planter box featuring a picket fence design and two tin pails. I prefer making handmade gifts for my mom for Mother’s Day because she can just buy what she wants for herself, so giving handmade means that she knows I care and put time, effort and love into the gift. Fresh herbs are planted in the tins, so it’s a cute and tasty gift I hope she’ll enjoy all summer long.
Supplies needed to make your own mini planter box:
- Picket Fence Planter
- Mini Galvanized Metal Pails
- Chalk Paint
- Baker’s Twine
- Patterned Paper
- Paint Brush
Begin by painting the raw wood of the picket fence planter box. I chose the color white because a white picket fence is so iconic, but feel free to use any color you want. I was really considering a light blue/aqua color. It only took one coat of chalk paint to cover, but it did take a while to paint since there are lots of nooks and crannies to reach into.
I created a mini bunting to decorate my box, but this step is optional. I cut five triangles out of scrap patterned paper and attached them to a string of baker’s twine using clear tape. Then I hung the bunting across the front of the planter box. It adds a pop of color, some visual interest and lots of cuteness!
