What is it about school supplies that makes everyone so happy? I’m not even in school anymore but I still love to buy pencils, pens, and markers whenever I can! I made this super cute Heart Fabric DIY Pencil Holder to help me organize a bit more and used the Gemini Die Cutting Machine to make this project super easy. Don’t be fooled by the amount of steps in this tutorial. Some of the steps probably could have been combined but I wanted to be as concise as possible since it’s a sewing tutorial. You’ll be surprise how easy this goes together!
Supplies needed to make your own fabric DIY pencil holder:
- Gemini™ Die Cutting Machine Fabric Bundle
- Threaders White Zips on a Roll
- Threaders Nesting Heart Dies for Fabric
- Solid Red Fat Quarter
- Rainbow Polka Dot Fat Quarter
- Sewing Machine & Supplies
Step 1. Measure and cut a 9″x 4″ rectangle template from a piece of cardstock.
Step 2. Use template to cut three rectangles from both fabrics.
Step 3. Follow instructions included with Gemini Cutting Machine to cut out a heart in the center of solid fabric.
Step 4. Keeping the hearts lined up, sew closely around the outer edge of heart cutout.
Step 5. Carefully add small slits all around the inner heart. This will help give you nice curves to your heart. Push one side into the other and press.
Step 6. Add small tabs to the end of a 9″ section of zipper.
Step 7. Lay a piece of the polka dot fabric so it shows through the heart cutout. Lay the zipper right side down over the cutout layer and then finish with a lining panel right side down. If that seems confusing, see the picture below on how to lay out!
Step 8. Repeat the last step on the other side. Use an iron to crease fabric, creating a hem over the zipper.
Step 9. Match corners of the outside and lining of pencil holder and hold in place with pins.
Step 10. Starting with the lining side, sew around the edges. Don’t forget to take care while going over zipper section and make sure to leave a 3″ opening to turn the bag right side out.
Step 11. Turn bag right side out and sew opening in lining closed.
Step 12. Push lining into the bag and press all the seams to finish.
Add all your favorite school supplies to your heart fabric DIY pencil holder and enjoy!
