Valentine’s Day can be such an overwhelmingly red and bright pink kind of holiday. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little holiday decor that is more subtle but still within the theme of the season. I do love hearts on Valentine’s Day, so I thought it’d be fun to take some fabric and cut them into easy hearts. I then simply sewed them up and attached them with string. I could have easily just glued them with fabric glue, but either way works. It was such an easy holiday project. This fabric homemade heart garland would also make great little Valentine for an older child to sew up for their friends. A great beginner sewing project. Plus, this is a great scrap fabric project.
Supplies needed to make your own homemade heart garland:
Step 1: Cut Hearts.
For these hearts, I wanted them to feel whimsical so I simply cut some hearts out on paper until I got a desired shape. I then placed my heart pattern on top of two layers of the same fabric and cut out a fabric heart. I did this with five different types of fabric (you could also choose to add interface to give it more structure).
Step 2: Sew or glue.
I then sewed around the edge of the heart. You could also simply use fabric glue to hold the heart together if you’d like. I then attached twine with my sewing machine. And that’s it! So simple yet very pretty and classy.
I hung my homemade heart garland on my winter wreath and I love it next the greens. You can make fewer or more hearts to make a garland. Or you could make a few and give them as valentines.
So many different ways to use these. I love that I can use my scraps and favorite fabrics.
