This over-sized DIY tote bag is the perfect summer accessory for hauling gear to the pool, the beach or the park. It’s even big enough to hold several towels! To dress it up for summer, I added these fun faux tie dye letters. Follow along as I show you how to make one for yourself!
Supplies needed to make your own summer DIY tote bag:
- Extra Large Canvas Tote Bag
- Cricut Stencil Material
- Fabric Markers (I used Flourescent)
- Electronic Die Cutting Machine
- Free Studio2 Cut File (download HERE)
- OR Letter Stencils
Step one. Begin by cutting the word art out of stencil paper using an electric die cutting machine. Use the cut settings recommended for stencil paper. Since you’ll be using the negative space, peel away the letters and discard.
Step two. Remove the clear stencil from the backing paper.
Step three. Press the stencil to the tote bag.
If you do not have an electronic cutting machine, now is the time to place your letter stencils on the DIY tote bag.
Step four. Use the fabric markers to fill the letters in with color. I chose to do a faux tie dye effect by layering the colors so they blended together, but let your imagination run wild! There are so many possibilities to completely customize this DIY tote bag!
To get really vibrant color, you may have to apply two or three layers of paint. When you are satisfied with your design, peel away the stencil paper.
The finished DIY tote bag is bright and cheery and so perfect for poolside fun! A quick, easy and super cute project? What a win-win summer project!
