Bandanas are a fun way to accessorize your pet in time for the fall season, and this tutorial for a no-sew DIY dog collar bandana comes together in less than an hour! It’s fast and fun to assemble, and best of all – it definitely will elicit a ton of “awwws” when you put it on them. Read on to learn how I made these no-sew bandanas and create your own for your little furry.
Supplies needed to make your own DIY dog collar bandanas:
- Fabric Fat Quarters
- Mini Iron
- Hem Tape
- Buckles
- Hot Glue or Fabric Glue
Step 1. First, let’s measure and cut the DIY dog collar. Measure how long you want the collar to be and add at least one inch to the length. For the width, aim to make it 2 inches wide. A small cat would need about 10 inches (+1), however it would depend on the weight of your cat as well. You can definitely create an adjustable one by using a slide adjuster and adding to the length, but since we are aiming to create a simple, no sew collar, we are sticking with a non-adjustable collar.
Step 2. Fold your cut collar piece in half and iron it down. Once folded, fold each section in half as well, creating what we call bias tape. I just love how convenient this mini iron is for small projects like this!
Step 3. Using a length of hem tape the same length as your collar, adhere the folded sides of the collar to prevent unraveling – it’s an easy way to secure the folds without sewing! Of course, if you would like to sew the edges you definitely can.
Step 4. Attach each end of your collar to each matching piece of a buckle with hot glue or fabric glue, then allow to dry. And the collar part is done!
Step 5. Let’s make it fancy by adding the fashionable bandana – you will want to create a pattern first. Fold a piece of paper in half and create a half-diamond shape, then size it according to the size of your pet!I eyeballed mine – but you can definitely hold up the shape against your pet’s neck so you can see the final size.
Step 6. Unfold the shape to create your diamond template. Trace the shape on the back of the fabric, adding at least 1/4″ margin so you can fold it to create clean edges. Cut the shape out and fold & iron the edges, using the template as your guide.
Step 7. Lay the collar on the back of the bandana. Use hem tape to secure the bandana’s edges together, lining and folding its two sides. And you are done!
Create a different DIY dog collar bandanas for the different days of the week. Your pet will definitely be one fashionable cutie while staying warm!
