Create a fun DIY watermelon pillow for summer! I love quirky accent pillows and this one is such a perfect addition to my collection. Its fun design is not only perfect for summer but I think it’s a great addition to a girl’s bedroom, too! See how this was easily put together so you can make your own watermelon pillow or even be inspired to create your own fruit pillow design.
Supplies needed to make your own DIY watermelon pillow:
- Natural Canvas Fabric
- Polyester Fiberfill
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Thread or Cord
- Acrylic Paint in: pink, green, white
- Fabric Medium
- Needle and Thread
- Iron
- Heat Transfer Material
- Paint Brush
Step 1. Line two layers of fabric together and finding the center, trace a round path from one edge to the other. I used a pencil and a thread/cord to draw the guideline, similar in method as when you use a protractor. Cut the fabric following the round guideline. You may also want to add a guideline for your watermelon drawing – and as such, create guidelines for the outer rind of the watermelon with the same method as well.
Step 2. Mix 2 parts paint to 1 part fabric medium, and start painting your watermelon following the guidelines you have made in the previous step. Wait for the green color to dry before proceeding with the pink. I originally was only intending to use pink and green, however I decided to add a light green in between them by mixing white and some green. After painting, wait for it to dry.
Step 3. While it’s drying, it’s time to make the seeds. To make it cuter, I used elongated hearts instead of normal teardrop shaped seeds. You can cut it from heat transfer material or alternatively, paint them on.
Step 4. Position the ‘seeds’ on the watermelon and iron in place. Peel off the clear backing afterward.
Step 5. Face the two pieces of fabric right side in, and sew along the side, making sure to leave at least a 3-4 inch gap on top so we can turn it inside out. Snip the excess fabric and cut lines along the curved portion of the pillow to lessen puckering when turned inside out.
Step 6. Once you have turned it inside out, stuff it with your fiberfill until you are satisfied with how it is filled, and sew the opening closed.
And you are done! This fun DIY watermelon pillow is a great addition to your summer patio or even a kid’s room!
